Thanks again gents  :)

Got a request to 'pimp' up an mdf farm. I added roof tiles, stone around the base, a cobbled interior courtyard, a wooden floor in the tower, new steps into the courtyard and texture to the walls. The client sent one of his bases for me to match and I think the colour is pretty close. There was also a scratchbuilt shack and two items of scatter terrain that were part of the job.

I wasn't really impressed by the mdf kit (from Sarissa). It went together ok but it's just been rushed. Grey board for the main roofs was a poor choice and lack of decent support under the courtyard isn't good either. The join in the courtyard could've been drawn better so it followed the supposed stone work. There were also what appeared to be construction lines that hadn't been removed and ended up as score lines on some of the walls; this might have been intentional but I personally think not. 2mm wasn't a great choice for wall material either; 3mm at least would've been better.

These are, of course, my personal opinions, others may vary...

cheers

James

That's come out very well actually. The ground to first-floor joint is really the only visual jar. You've definitely improved it no end! 😂

I have built one of these so its very useful to see how you have enhanced your version.

did you use plastic card to make the roof tiles?

Very nice indeed  :-*

I can't help wondering, given the issues you mentioned, is there much of a saving between pimping up an mdf kit or starting from scratch?

There would be a bit more work in making from scratch but not a massive amount really and in my opinion it would look better from scratch as it would definitely loose that 'kit' look.

I puchased the farm set at Salute, and it is the next building for my Wargods collection.

I was pretty impressed by the finished model shown there, but now I am a bit pulled down to earth by your comments  ???
Anyway, thanks for the useful information, I'll consider them when starting to build that model.

cheers Thomas

I’m possibly being overly critical (20+ years as a professional modelmaker) but given the hype they get I was hoping for more.
