trenches?
« on: June 28, 2009, 12:32:44 PM »
Grand manner, ironclad, amera, kallistra (hexes)
is what i'm considering , am i missing any good ones?
any opinions on them?

I like generic since i want one set to cover ww1-2-3 ::)

I'm leaning towards the hexed ones from kallistra, looks nice, affordable and pretty customisable, the jagged edges are a bit of a turnoff, but i think that could be fixed pretty easily..
(Read: the reason i'll place them in a box and never do anything with them ;))

You're so right.  I game on the Hexon II terrain, so that's no problem for me, but if you glue an irregularly formed piece of card to the bottom of the trench models, you can easily mask the hex form.

I have "upgraded" mine by adding "real" balsa duck boards, covering the earth in fine sand (flocked in glue), then sprayed the whole with army painter brown and highlighted it with ivory.  Looks very nice IMHO and just as good as the more expensive resin ones.

Wasn't there a post on here a few months back about trench inserts to put in your own trench system you cut from foam? Seemed like a good idea to get rid of the raised trench look you have with other models.

Build your own trenches.
For my Tactica Presentation 2014 I scratchbuilt trenches from foamcore, plaster and some sand.

Ironclad miniatures are good, especially their bunkers.

Wasn’t sure about contributing to this thread as Mr Vaxy seems to have dug it up from nine and a half years ago!

Urban Construct trenches are very good as more generously proportioned than most.

The picture below is from a recent game. Trenches were painted by my friend Meic.

Pink insulating foam, cut and glued to hardboard. Sand, paint, dry brush, trench walls and duck boards.

3 months work.

Ironclad miniatures are good, especially their bunkers.

For 15mm it's also worth noting that Ironclad designed their trenches to fit common basing systems. We play a lot of Peter Pig rulesets with figures on 30mm square bases. Some resin trenches are too narrow to accept the bases, but the Ironclad ones fit easily.

For 25/28mm a lot of trenches are designed to fit singly based figures mounted on pennies or 2p pieces
