Holiday projects - ww1 East Africa / Cold War Europe/ ww2
« on: August 13, 2019, 08:10:09 AM »
So if we are lucky, we get a holiday once a year ( if you are even luckier, you might get two ?) .

A couple of years ago, I cottoned on that I could take a shoebox of figures and paints away with me, and as the wife and kids had a “lie-in” every morning, I could wake at the crack of dawn, and get some figures finished (if I was quiet of course).

Well the shoe box has got bigger and bigger every year, as I get more and more ambitious as to what I might be able to finish. This year that shoebox has become a fold down crate (gulp !)

As the wife and kids have slept, this is what I have churned out....

Ww1 East Africa - 28mm
I needed some boats, sailors and deck kit, for our East Africa games, so have been able to paint some sailors as Brits, and some as German.

British sailors

German sailors

Deck guns

I also decided I wanted a radio antenna for our games, so I built one that will do the job. It came from Warbases. Here you can see it with A new German landing party that has been finished.

The German landing party plus mg.

And finally for East Africa, I’ve completed the worlds hardest gun to make. It’s the Indian mountain gun from Empress Jazz range. It was a pig to build, but worth it in the end.

From this ....

To this .....

Ok, next topic....10mm Cold War.
These have been ongoing for a few years, and with Has.been on my back to finish them, I thought I would bring them away and try to sort them.

I’ve been able to base them all now, but still need to finish off some of the British tanks.

Soviet bmps

British armour.

Finally. We played a fun game of ww2 Fall of France in 20mm, using Rapid Fire rules a couple of weeks ago.
I decided after the game, that the German forces needed more recognisance units, so I ordered some 20mm plastic motorbike and sidecar figures. I went for plastic, as the metal option seemed quite expensive.
I ordered a box, but was then talking to JC from our group, that said he has another couple of boxes of the same figures, on the top of his wardrobe. Oh heck I thought, I’ll end up with loads of them...guess what...I did end up with loads of them. The black ones were built before I came away on holiday, and I have built the others whilst I’m away.
Looks like a big painting section for these when I get home .

Built and undercoated before I came away.

Now millions of them.  lol

Happy holidays....I think I’ll need another one after getting up early every morning to do this.  :o

Great stuff. I did something similar last week while away, but was no-where near as productive.

How early where you getting up, or how long was the family sleeping in for?

I was up at 6am on average, my wife was up at 9am, and the kids, well they are now teenagers, need I say more ? They had to be dug out of their trenches !!

I have the same Indian Mountain gun and I do not look forward to putting it together. You have done a terrific job with yours.

Impressive dedication. I like a lie in on holiday as well. Part of the reason for going on holiday? I have to get up early enough the rest of the year.

I too get up for work at 6am out of necessity, but on holiday it’s daft. I get up at 6am out of excitement. Must be the hobby I guess.

Final day on holiday, so whilst the rest slept, I got up and made “ boaty mcboat face “. A steam boat for our East Africa games.
Easy enough to put together, and I’ll paint it when I get home.
I’ve done one of these already, so had an idea of how it went together.

Then found an image of another boat that I have at home, ready for East Africa game.
So that a few boats now, might need a river or coastline for a game ?

Many thanks Doug, back home now for a rest lol.
The steam boat is a Sarissa kit.
Only cost about a tenner.
Nice and easy to build and a bit of a giggle when it gets to the table.

As always you do your self a disservice.
You do very good work &, since the arrival of 'The Shed' your productivity has
been staggering.  People do not listen to his down crying of this work, it is even
better in the 'flesh'.
I look forward to seeing the WW1 East Africa bits in our next game of 'Askari'
(the working title for our WW1 East Africa games).

Then after that 10mm Moderns??????
