Can Pulp Alley be used for later periods ?
« on: August 14, 2019, 03:55:36 PM »
I'm intrigued by Pulp Alley but I'm wanting to do a kind of 1970s theme with a gang of Bruce Lee esque Martial Artists, A Blaxpoitation private detective team, a bunch of Soviet agents and some generic evil super science guys. Can pulp alley do that ot should I stick to Fistful of Lead/Fistful of Kung Fu ?

Pulp Alley and Fistful of Lead Core Rules can both be used for any period really. I'm mostly playing FfoL these days and I've played numerous periods past, present and future with it.

If you already have ffol, I would use traits to develop the character types that you refer to. I don't think Wiley Games are planning on releasing a 70's Blaxploitation supplement specifically, but it would be pretty easy to do with either the Core Rules or Galactic Heroes.

I use Pulp Alley for future Post Apocalyptic games, and FfoL for just about anything.

I've used Pulp Alley for Pulp (of course), science fiction, WWII, the old west, etc. and it handles all of them fine.

To add to the chorus of yes, I have used Pulp Alley for:

Pulp
Western
Victorian Science Fiction
Post-Apocalyptic
Modern
WW2
WW1
80's era South American drug wars
Space Opera
Medieval
Fantasy
Superheroes

So, I am going to say it should work.    lol

+1.  If you want the game to feel like an action-adventure story then Pulp Alley is the way to go.

+1 for Pulp Alley, I have played a similar setting and it works very well.

However, if you want to emphasize the over-the-top-action of Hong Kong movies, I would stick to Fistful of Kung Fu.

Fistful of Lead & Fistful of Kung Fu don't use cards like those in Pulp Alley, right? I think I saw a Pulp Alley fan present a big game using Fistful of Lead because he wanted to streamline the game and focus on the fighting. My brother played in that game and enjoyed it.

I'm a Pulp Alley fan, but I don't mind stealing stuff from .45 Adventures or Savage Worlds.

@warrenpeace: You are correct, unlike PA these games do not use cards.

Fistful of Lead uses normal playing cards (or genre themed decks with the special rules on the cards) for tactical activation. Certain cards also confer special actions on the miniatures activated by them, such as healing a wound, removing shock, getting extra dice, etc. Pulp Alley uses special cards with challenges on them that relate to miniature core stats, etc.
