15mm Zulu War Armies
« on: June 29, 2009, 03:53:38 AM »
Hi,

I thought I'd share some images of my DBX projects.

I've had a few people ask "Why DBX?!?!?" There are a few reasons. It's a system a few of us are familiar with at the club and I've found it a good way to introduce the younger members of the club to Historical Wargaming. I'm also on a budget, have limited space and as I enjoy the painting/modelling side of the hobby more than the gaming side, I'm not really bothered by the how the game plays as it does others I know. I have fun and push my toys around which to me is all that really matters.

I'm looking forward to field these in the not too distant future and yelling 'USUTHU' as I close in on my opponants, if i get that close  ;)

THE ZULU ARMY

I plan to add more elements to this army in the not to distant future.
The shield markers keep track of the amount of times certain Zulu elements recoil. You don't need markers but I liked the idea of making them up and it looked like a novel way of keeping track. I plan on making some for my British Army using pith helmets. I have a rather large pile of British infantry which I'll never use, in particular those posed loading their rifles, so it'll be off with their helmets!

THE BRITISH ARMY

Like the Zulus, I plan on adding a few more elements to this army just for colour. This includes some Highlanders in trews and a couple of different Volunteer Units.

Fantastic stuff old boy. The ‘Jammed!’ marker for the Gatling catches my eye particularly. I never considered using such rules/basing for this period.
Thanks for sharing!

Sorry I'm late, can't think how I missed this one. Simply wonderful. Thanks for sharing them, Barry.

I've got 15mm Brit and Zulu armies, too. Haven't played with them in years. They're not as nicely done as yours, they are from back in the day when I churned my figures out in an even more slapdash manner than I do now. Almost makes me want to go back to 15mm, seeing your little guys. I never cared for the Essex British regulars all that much as they seemed to have really tiny legs (most of mine were by Irregular), by I love their Zulus and have got zillions of them.

:o This from a man who came 10th out of 46 in the last LPL and regularly gets lots of praise for his games reports! By that logic,  Brian O'Driscoll is a bit dodgy at playing rugby lol

Isn't it about time for another report, by the way?  ;)

Oh and Barry's 15mm figures are lovely, too, of course! I also missed the first post, but I am an fool, so that's no surprise.

Thanks for the kind words.

These were the first Essex I bought just on 20 years ago now. Ninty nine percent of my miniatures are by Essex as I found them very consistent and well detailed at least compared to my Minifigs, which have a certain appeal to them. I was also buying alot of miniatures sight unseen as thisa was the time before the internet and wargaming magazines were very rare.

Agreed. They are some of the best reports I've read. My wife even thinks they're great!

Generally speaking I agree, the Essex Zulu War range is great, and very detailed. It was just a feeling I had at the time about the British regulars: that they looked slightly odd, everything else in the range was splendid. But painted up yours look fantastic, I think maybe I was a bit hasty in dismissing them back then.

I understand what you're saying I also find some of their figures do indeed look out of proportion. Personally I find a lot of Essex ranges comical (?) looking but I rather like that.  I also find quite a lot of their poses very limited but it appears that they're trying to address that. At least with some of the later releases that I've bought.

Excellent stuff, sirrah!  I've got a 15mm Rorke's Drift set from Old Glory, but it's not nearly as diverse as yours.

Peter Pig does indeed seem like nice stuff with a few unusual, but always welcome models.

There's always Gallia which are sold through Warrior Miniatures. Mind you they are only any good if you like that stunted chunky look that was all the rage in the 80's (who remembers Mikes Models?).

Unfortuntaley there's no pics on the site but I've just been upstairs to dig mine out, oh the nostalgia. Crap painting too  :)

As I said elsewhere, I am SERIOSLY impressed by that collection. I was in Spririt Games in Burton on Trent not long ago and I think thay had 15mm Zulu War, by Naismith, IIRC. Their website should help look for these.

Hope that helps.
