A few WotR questions
« on: August 21, 2019, 10:18:35 AM »
Hello,

I‘m currently working on 2 15mm WotR armys to go with the bloody barons ruleset. I decidet to step away from 28mm since I never would finish an army in this scale.

A few questions now occurred while I‘m working on that project.
At first: How big should these square livery banners be in 15mm?
I got a few generic ones from Peter Pigs starter deal which are 12mm square. But the nice Petes flags for the characters which I want to include
Range from 14 to 18mm square, which seems a little big

Second: Warwick, Edward IV and Northumberland (at Towton) will be the first 3 generals I want to paint. The armys are quiet small at this moment.
What kind of armour/ coat d arms whould they wear? I saw some painted examples of the perry commands were edward wears a golden armour but no coat d arms. Are there any sources on preferred armour they wear at this battle?

Thanks

I wouldn't worry too much about accuracy in terms of size of the banners. The examples on the Perry plastic WoR range are a very good example of how big they ought to be- a lot smaller than one would imagine. Having said that, I've always felt that heraldic standards, banners, standards etc always look a bit better if they're a bit bigger then the actual scale versions, though this is obviously down to personal taste.

There are some examples of 'enlarged' standards in the pics below (from my Verneuil 1424 collection) and some frontal and side on pics that illustrate my point:

I would recommend investing in the following publications, all very reasonably priced and meticulously researched from The Lance and Longbow Society:

Pub-001   Heraldic Banners of the Wars of the Roses Vol.1 A-H   £9.00

Pub-002   Heraldic Banners of the Wars of the Roses Vol.2 H-R   £9.00

Pub-003   Heraldic Banners of the Wars of the Roses Vol.3 S-Y   £9.00

Pub-004   Standards, Badges & Livery Colours of the Wars of the Roses.   £10.00

Pub-005   From Knights to Squires - The Gentry & Peerage of Towton Vol.1   £7.00

Pub-042   From Knights to Squires - The Gentry & Peerage of Towton Vol.2   £7.00

If you're not doing Towton you can miss out on purchasing the last two books.

The link to The Lance and Longbow Society Shop is here:

I hope that this is of  some help to you(?)

The Poleaxed War of the Roses Sourcebooks may also be of interest- http://www.vexillia.com/common/shop_books.html#t-1 - plus there's some free 15 & 25 mm scale flags here - http://www.vexillia.com/news.html - look in the right hand column (you may have to scroll down a touch).

At first: How big should these square livery banners be in 15mm?  I got a few generic ones from Peter Pigs starter deal which are 12mm square. But the nice Petes flags for the characters which I want to include range from 14 to 18mm square, which seems a little big.

When I've designed my own 15 mm flags I produce each flag in multiple sizes from 18 to 24 mm.  For some livery flags I have cut them down to 14 mm just so they fit on the flag staffs.  I too tend to think that these flags benefit from being over sized.

See links below for more examples and more free flags:

Thanks for the replys.
I think I will test fit some of the flags I own to see which size looks best.
Thanks for the links. I will need a lot more livery flags and freehand painting in this scale is not my thing😄

I will try to post some pictures by the end of the month about the progress I made.

Cheers

If it helps, Edward IV is described in primary sources as wearing gilded armour (at least from Barnet onwards).

Of course, when in doubt, steel plate with a surcoat with the coat of arms never goes amiss!
