Hungary '45 game prep photos
« on: August 26, 2019, 02:17:37 PM »
Hi All,

I've just become a member of the forum here (TY to the Admin for my acceptance), but I've been a lurker for years!

My latest project has been to complete units needed for a WW2 scenario planned, based on a action fought in Hungary during January 1945.   We'll be playing the game using a modified version of the Tank On Tank board game rules, but with an areas map instead of one with a hex grid.

Hoping to do an AAR later when the game comes off in a couple weeks, but wanted to show some mock-up photos of some of the prep work on units that'll be involved in the game -

Figure size - scale = 12mm - 1/144th.

For this Hungary scenario, I'm going to try and use some TOE guides so players can quickly understand their game units and any attached assets - and this will help me too when briefing them pre-game.

The idea here really came from the units cards in the board game East Front Tank Leader, which I've always admired, and as made here give info for using with our mod-version of the Tank On Tank rules for miniatures (counters seen on the unit rosters are types from the game, or custom-made additions).

Next I'll have to start the Soviet unit guides for this scenario.  I'm also thinking that making up these guides could work well if ever doing a mini-campaign based on the history of these Jan. battles fought in Hungary (and since these guides can all be organized for units ready-to-go in my collection) -

The Luchs as KG-HQ is purely conjectural, but one remained in service in the 4th Kavallerie Brigade/Div. in Dec. '44, and with it's long-range radio set, seemed fun for the HQ and artillery direction, so slipped it into the game roster (and I already had the model too).  :-*

EDIT:Inserted a modified version of the chart here to remove any offensive, historical iconography.

Finished configuring the terrain placement and doing the artwork for the game map - "Attack Towards Zamoly, 7 January 1945" -

Will be running this game for my group in a few weeks, and then after any needed tweaks, at our local con in November.

With the 1st German assault towards Borbalamajor stalled, the 2nd attack will throw the 23rd Panzer Division into the effort from the southwest, in an attempt to finally encircle and capture Zamoly.

Here's the map for this upcoming scenario, showing the battle area south of Borbala (this town now in the upper reaches of the map area) -

Deploying to the front while running only on one of their twin-diesel engines for low-noise approach, Emchas of the 9th Guards Tank Brigade near Zamaloy, Hungary.

(well, these are the first 10 models done of a total of 21 Bn. Shermans I'll be needing for this next scenario)

These are 1/144th scale Revell Sherman models retrofitted with Pegasus Hobbies' 76mm turrets, which I can swap off back and forth with the 75mm turrets that came with the kits, and can serve double-duty for US Army M4s fighting in the winter of 1944-45.

Btw, the 1/144th scale Revell - "US Army Vehicles" box set is a great buy, as it contains 2 X Sherman 75s, 2 X M8 Armored Cars, and 2 X 2 1/2 ton truck models for not too much cash.

Got off the flight test, er, make that play test from the 2nd Hungary '45 scenario yesterday.  :)

Here's a shot I think looks pretty cool taken during the game.
