Crimean War - Great War Miniatures or Wargames Foundry
« on: June 30, 2019, 03:29:42 PM »
Hi all
I've a few Wargames Foundry Crimean War and want to put together a complete British Light and Heavy Cavalry Brigade with RHA battery
However I am unsure wether to use Wargames Foundry or Great War Miniatures
I am also considering a Guards Brigade of Infantry and again undecided wether to look at Great War Miniatures or Foundry
Which would also be compatible (size) with Warlords plastic Russians

Cheers
Steve

I only have a couple of Foundry Russian infantry inadvertently acquired long ago, but even without digging them out I know they're far too small to fit in with the Warlord ones. I can't speak for their Great War compatriots, though if they're of a similar size to the WW1 figs I have from that manufacturer they should work well.

Thanks for the advice I was wondering which Cavalry were the best models at the moment but whichever range I want to carry on with I'm undecided but like you mention Foundry might be too small

It's an old range, though I should point out in fairness that they may have refreshed or even replaced it altogether since I acquired my two strays, so it may pay to seek other opinions.

I began gaming the Crimean war before GW range, so most of my miniatures are from Foundry but IMO, the GW range is much better. If I had to start Crimean war today, I would go for GW.
Although, I must say that I include GW officers, musicians and standard bearers in my Foundry units without problems. It add variety.

The Foundry figs are nice but are much smaller than the current ranges of 28mm figs. So they really won't fit in well with the newer items. Hence, if you started with Foundry then I think you would be best off sticking with that range. You can diversify things using head swaps from plastic ranges, which it what I do to spice things up. One note, as you probably know, the Foundry Crimean range is fairly static in poses, so you get the same marching figure pose over and over again, which can be boring.

P.S. Great War Miniatures will scale well with Warlord

I've decided to go with Great War Miniatures and placed order with Northstar for the Light Brigade set - I hope that there are more Great War Miniatures Crimean releases especially a RHA set and General Scarlett for my British Heavy Cavalry Brigade which is my next project after the Light Brigade
My decision was assisted by finding 3 x 32 man unpainted Great War Miniatures British Guards Battalions in the loft which I had forgotten all about

That would help. I keep hoping something like that happens to me.

My all favourite remain always the old wargame foundry..they are charming neat and easy to paint castings..considering the fact that you already have some plus the usual big sale that WF use to offer at the beginning of the year , I’ll have no doubt in remaining with your Foundry small army

I did a Scarlet conversion from a Great War Miniatures figure recently. You can see the result here:

I love when things like that happen.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.
