Crimean War. Regimental mascot/casualty marker
« on: August 30, 2019, 08:37:51 PM »
I need to get back into painting, so picked something easy to start with.
42nd regiment Black Watch.
Figures from Warlord Games.
Need some help, anyone know the correct colour for collars and cuffs.
Would also appreciate any link to colour picture for reference.

Presumable Royal blue as they were the Riyal Highlanders?

Good to see you painting!

Crafty marketing by Warlord Games. Their Crimean Highland Regiments come with 28 figures, where as British metal regiments have 32 figures in box. Extra packs have 8 figures in them, so either 4 short to make full regiment or I have 4 spare figures.

Decision made ordered another full regiment and extra pack. That give me total 64 figures.
They will become 79th Regiment and to finish Brigade will order 93rd (thin red line.) from Great War Miniatures.

I think your decision of "easy to start with" is radically different than most peoples.  Plaid?  Not so easy.  And, yes, blue facings all the way back to the American revolution and a bit before methinks.

When you find someone that sells plaid paint, please let me know.  ;)

After a weekend of destroying my eyes I now have 8 figures painted this far.

My tongue in cheek comment about tartan my come back to bite me on the bum. Tried first on piece of paper, not so bad, however need to go to model shop and get thinner brush than I normally use to paint.

Figures not nice and flat, sculptor put lots of nice pleats in the kilt. Looks nice, going to be rotten to paint.

I think painting plaid resolves around the artistic concept that the image is more about what you leave out than what you put it - leave out as much as possible!  :D

If it makes you feel any better, I work in 15 mm and I've painted plaid and checked hose int that size - or something like it.   o_o

Help please.
Command stand of 42nd Black Watch is next to paint.
By this time was the drummers coat red like the rest of the regiment or like napoleonic era and earlier of a different colour.
If so anyone know what colour the 42nd’s was. Also 79th’s and 93rd’s whilst I an asking.
Thank you.

A quick google search would have spared you the trouble of asking.

Facings were royal blue for the 42nd because they were a royal regiment, as James pointed out above. They were green for the 79th and yellow for the 93rd. By the mid-1850's, drummers no longer used reversed colours, which means they wore the same red coats as the rest of the rank and file with the addition of shoulder wings.

David was asking how the tartan painting was going. The true answer is slow.
Only 16 painted so far.
Must say big thank you to Lorenzo from Warlord Games Nottingham. My 2nd regiment “Cameron Highlanders” arrived and as happens with metal charging figures with bayonets some get broken. 3 days from making call and sending photo replacements arrived. Excellent service.

Going to paint all 32 before basing. Although it will not look correct the figures with weapon charging forward need to go on the rear rank so that the base will give some protection to the bayonet.

Not bad though fella, keep going, they will look great ranked up.  Always in awe of anyone attempting tartan, these look pretty good.
