Quick question. So long as I keep the figures from each manufacturer in a regiment, do foundry and Great War miniatures look OK together on same battlefield. I have got 2 regiments of British Guards from GWM and they look fine along side Warlord Games figures. Not got any Foundry figures yet hence the question.

So the conversation with Digits went along the line as follows. Warlord Highlanders are modelled on Black Watch, but Cameron Highlanders are different. Digits asks how. My technical reply, carermons don’t have as many dangling things on the furry bit on front of kilt. Long pause. Now remember it’s called a sporran. Still don’t know what dangles from them, but Black Watch have six, Cameron’s only 3. Very knowledgeable our conversations.

This weeks job is careful removal with modelling knife of said dangly bits,  trying not to damage models or fingers.

Crimean War. Pipers kilts

Watching utube I noticed the black watch pipers have a different colour kilt, being red compared to blue/green of drummers and soldiers. Before I paint these and the piper for Cameron Highlanders. Would the pipers kilt be different than the rest of regiment in the Crimean war.

You are opening a can of worms with your questions about different tartans for pipers and the rest of the regiment!

In the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment), modern convention (well, before the Black Watch disappeared into the Royal Regiment of Scotland in 2006) was that the pipers wear Royal Stewart tartan.  They were granted this right in 1865 by Queen Victoria.

Royal Stewart:

Aha, you say!  This was AFTER the Crimean War, so pipers will be in Government Tartan like the rest of the regiment!

Government Tartan:

Well, not so fast.  It appears that prior to 1865, the pipers and the band of the Black Watch wore a reddish tartan called 'Band Tartan' .  Read all about it here:  http://www.scottishtartans.co.uk/42nd_Band_Tartan.pdf

42nd Band Tartan:

For the Camerons, at least, you should be ok with the piper in the same Cameron of Erracht as the rest of his regiment.

My pleasure.  Don't take my word on this, though, there are other ideas out there.  For most highland regiments, the safest guess is to have the pipers in the same tartan as the rest of the soldiers.  But it's never consistent, as the rules changed not only from regiment to regiment, but also within the same regiment from year to year!

Here's my take, which I think you'll find quite brilliant, on Highland Pipers...
If I fancy doing the Bagpipe a different Tartan to the kilt I really go for a strong contrast. Wargamers/critics in general being thickos, immediately conclude you know summat they don't and keep their gobs shut!

;D

So what colours would you use on banded tartan. Thinking charcoal grey vertical lines, what colour though for diagonal lines. Green, would that be dark green? Presume red is scarlet.

So whilst I finish of the first highland regiment, here’s a British brigade nearly finished. Still one regiment needs bases doing.
