Major Curran – OIC, Alpha Company: 33rd Provincial Battalion, New Guard
A veteran of the Great War, Major Curran is an experienced officer having commanded infantry units in North Africa and on the Western Front. While he retired from the Army on his return to Australia in 1918, he was ready to serve when the New Guard called for him.

Major Curran is the first finished miniature for my 1938 Australian Civil War project. For more information including my hack attempts at some story, see my blog: https://australia1938.blogspot.com/

What mini is that? You've done him up very well - love the tired expression!

Thanks for the comments! I've always felt a bit guilty about the dirty agrax-wash/highlight method but as I get on I realise I need to lower my standards if I ever want to finish a project.

He's the commander figure from this Warlord Games pack: https://store.warlordgames.com/products/bef-command-1 I believe he was originally from the BEF Miniatures range Warlord acquired some years back.

The separate heads give some fantastic options, so I suspect I'll end up buying at least one more pack. There's a characterful bare head that I feel would look fantastic on this same figure, and the runner/medic figure is a lovely sculpt too.

Obviously not Wally Curran then. ;)

Nice PJ.  North Africa? Great War? Only Australian involvement I can recall in NA was a tiny contribution to the war against the Senussi.

Actually named after a Staff-Sergeant from my unit when I first joined. The moustache made it too tempting a parallel to name him anything else  ;)

You've got me on North Africa; my Australian military history knowledge is predominantly focussed on Vietnam to today. Maybe the good Major was a lateral transfer from the British? Either that or his background is with the NSW Lancers, having been part of the Imperial Camel Corps at Bahariya? It's alternate history anyway, I'm sure I'll get more wrong than just this!  ;D

The history is quite plausible, Aussies were based in Egypt from November 1914, so the good Major could well have been in North Africa, service doesn’t necessarily mean combat. Many Aussies were in North Africa without serving at Gallipoli and went straight onto Europe...

Nice work Splod!
