Best CHEAP Paints for plastic terrain
« on: September 05, 2019, 12:01:43 PM »
I'm wanting to paint up a huge amount of terrain over the next few weeks and while I'm not after a specific brand, what type of paint is best for doing this. Obviously I don't want to use my miniatures paint because that would cost megabucks. Am I best to go for enamel or acrylic tube paints, or buy some test pot house paints or what?

Any help would be great,

Thanks in advance

EDIT: I'll probably be using a spray acrylic to begin with, but the regular cheap tube paints seem to be thin over the top of this.

I use Windsor and Newton Galleria for my scenery and it gives good coverage without being too costly.

I generally buy tester pots from Wilkos (or any other DIY shop). They're generally dirt cheap and there's a decent range of colours.

I tend to use cheap acrylics from DIY shops (and these varies a lot). I would stay away from enamels because they are smelly, take longer to dry and sometime some plastic compounds do not react well to them. I assume that there will be some kind of foam involved in your terrain.

Artists' Acrylics are very good and cheap if you buy big pots.
Emulsion paint is also pretty good for scenery

What sort of terrain? Craft paint is commonly used for scratch-build stuff, but dunno if I'd use it on a $50 GW terrain sprue.

3d printed abs plastic. I was thinking about testers. Might pick some of that up.

I too use Wilko tester pots, as The Wanderer said they have a good range of colours and are cheap.

This. Wallpaints are durable and come in a myriad shades and hues. Plus, should you need more of the same it is eazy to get the same mix again.

I've used tester pots, but mostly use the cheap craft paints from the works.

Both work, but I find the lighter colours need a couple of coats, as the filler to pigment range is high. Darker colours aren't too bad.

Same. That or the big cheap tubes of art acrylics you can get from the range, the works or other shops like them. I have used burnt umber for ground cover and got some cream to add to that for dry-brushing etc. I also found a nice selection pack of brushes from the works for relatively cheap too.

I use Crafter's Acrylics.  A good waide range of colours that go on well, although I tend to thin them a little and they are relatively cheap.
