(commercial) Edinburgh Miniature Company - Wraith Hoplites preview
« on: September 09, 2019, 10:15:22 AM »
Hello,

I'm in the process of setting up shop so I'll come back and link the webstore here in the coming weeks... in the meantime I've been keen to show off some preview images on LAF.

http://edinburghminiaturecompany.com

This is the start of a major project that will span 2+ years, the objective of which is a cohesive and modern mythology range. I've started with these hoplites to set the tone and style/size for the rest of the range (once I have the baseline human done I can design the monsters better against them). Allowing my miniatures to sit beside and scale with existing historical ranges is important so I've also produced conversion sets of heads and arms to expand modelling opportunities.

All miniatures will be metal initially and come in as few pieces as possible. Resin is a possibility for some larger pieces. The hoplites here are 3 parts - only the shield and right weapon arm are separate. Heads and left arms are all attached to the body.

I've been sculpting for about 11 years now and done the odd commission over the years, to do this project justice though I've actually taken a career break from my profession (investments) to get things up and running.

Appreciate these might be a bit boring compared to say Wraith Hoplites and Harpies, but they will come pretty quickly. After this "Blue Faction" I have Spartans ready for mould making and then it's on to undead, followed by Cyclops and Harpies.

Queries, comments, support etc. very much appreciated. Cheers,

Very nice!
Good luck with the venture.
I have become quite obsessed with Ancient style fantasy figures but more Bronze agey. These are lovely though and might sit alongside the Wargods figures.

Since you are going with a more fantasiesque aproach, I would suggest to not use peloponnesian war episima on the shields, like the Lamda and the rest well known city symbols. I know they are popular because most people are familiar with them, but they are very specific time frame wise.

Yep, that would be my advice as well. Plain shields are better, or offer purchasers a choice of plain or decorated shields.

Nice figures indeed.  I concur with the request for plain shields as my forces are mainly for mythological games.  What size are they compared with Victrix and Warlord Games?

Thanks all. Yes the comparison shots are against Victrix plastics. I'll try and get a picture against some warlord minis soon, my stuff works well beside their Macedonian Phalangite plastics, as well as their plastic Celtic Warriors. Their plastic hoplites however, formerly Immortal, are smaller scaled and my sculpts and don't look good side by side.

Regarding the shields, thanks for the input - luckily the shields are in a different mould from the miniatures and I have blank shields going into their own new mould next week. To be honest I half expected people to be using Victrix shields in place of mine anyway. I'll likely make shields an option when purchasing.

You could go with a boeotian shield instead of the argolic round hoplon. They look more interesting with their double cut away and there is more room for a fantasy twist. In greek art the heroes and the gods usually carry boeotian shields as an artistic node to an older era. Boeotian shields were a derivative of the eight shaped bronze age shields and their archaic transformations.

That would be interesting.
Maybe earlier hoplites with the extra arm and leg armour?

I have plans for a few factions- each one with a different style, theme, and shield design.

The 28mm range has fantasy leanings but I'm keen on doing smaller scale historical stuff early next year - the Trojan war in 15mm and Greco Persian Wars in 10mm are quite appealing.

Some shots of more test casts below. All the archers are single piece casts, no nasty assembly required.

The bows have however proved tricky to cast up and I've had a high percentage of failures, I'll need to thicken them up for the next mould. The first lot to retail will be as shown here.

I'm hoping to have my webstore live this week so these will finally be available for purchase.

Have you considered a musician and banner bearer?

Is the only figure holding the spear-upright the only one in a "foot on rock" stance? i.e. is there one with both feet on terra firma?
