336 years from the Siege of Vienna, 1683
« on: September 11, 2019, 04:56:33 PM »
12 September 1683. Battle of Kahlenberg (Battle of Vienna).
The combined armies of the Poles under Jan Sobieski, Imperial troops, Saxons, Bavarians and other allies defeated Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa's Ottoman army just on the time that Vienna was going to fall.
This battle changed the fate of Europe.

I don't wish to resurrect an old thread of mine, I narrate all the story there

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=99842.0

for those who haven't seen it, it is good to visit it, I thin I did a good job.

Here I put some pictures, a lot of them unpublished.

Beautiful stuff.  I have a project in 15mm that will be more at the skirmish scale for smaller actions before, during, and after the siege, so it's always inspiring to see this.

What a lot of eye candy for us to drool over , Dinos . It certainly was a mighty effort to put all this together, I applaud your resilience in sticking to the task and bringing it all to the table . So many times we start projects only to stall and falter , it’s nice to see a large undertaking come to fruition. Well done .

Lovely; but more at home on the pike-and-shot page?

Thank you. But it is on the verge.
I had thought about it.
The starting thread was also in the Age of Big Battalions section.

In 2017 many saw it, nobody made this remark

If the moderator thinks so, he may move it. No problem.

Great stuff! I have heard the tasty croissant stems from this siege, for all the standards captured.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Myth or true, the story goes about like that:

https://www.vienna-concerts.com/en/vienna_croissant

"In 1683, Vienna (the capital of Austria) was under siege by over a hundred thousand Ottoman Turks. After several months of trying to starve the city into submission, the Turks attempted to tunnel underneath the walls of the city. Fortunately for the entire city, some bakers hard at work in the middle of the night heard the sounds of the Turks digging and alerted the city’s defenders. This advance warning gave the defenders enough time to do something about the tunnel before it was completed. Soon, King John III of Poland arrived at the head of an army that defeated the Turks and forced them to retreat.

To celebrate the end of the siege and the part they had played in lifting it, several bakers in Vienna made a pastry in the shape of the crescents they had seen on the battle standards of the enemy. They called this new pastry the “Kipfel” which is the German word for “crescent” and continued baking if for many years to commemorate the Austrian victory over the Turks in 1683. It was not until 1770 that the pastry came to be known as the croissant."

I'm glad you liked it Antonio! You make great postings and I think you are also playing spectacular games!
This project took me more than four years to complete and at the same time I tried to read whatever related literature could fall into my hands...

Thank you so much for your kind words! It took me a lot of time to bring all these forces to the desirable number.
I had also to make the fort, a generic Vauban construction which has served us well in more other occasions.
And yes, it is one of the rare times I pursued a task for so long and it came to fruition.
I'm also chasing a girl for 20 years now, she says she sees me as a friend, but that's another story  lol
