Some Air Support for Angola
« on: September 15, 2019, 04:54:57 PM »
I've been painting some aeroplanes for the Angolan Border War, as well as photographing some of my old stuff:

Splendid work.

The 1/100 Transall is actually a 1970s-vintage Heller mould - I've done a couple of those back in the day (the 1990s and 2000s, mind), so commiserations. You did a great job on it.

Cheers!  Yeah, I loved the Buck... A tragedy when the RAF binned them.  The RAF never wanted the Buck, but everyone ended up loving the old girl.  At least they got some sterling use out of them during Op Granby.  It was sad for some years afterwards to visit Lossiemouth and see the Buck nosecones all leaning up against the fence in the scrapyard behind Elgin railway station. :( But there is one parked outside a petrol-station between Elgin and Lossie - it looks epic at night when the owner sticks all the nav-lights on. :)

Ta!  Ah, was it really?  That explains the near-complete lack of build-quality, then...  :D

Trust the French never to make it easy for anyone, be it Brit or Boche.  lol

That said, it really depends on the kit - I've done an 1/48 scale Alouette II as well as 1/72nd Cougar, Alouette III and Fouga Magister and these were remarkably easy to do, given the complexity of the aircraft in question and stand up rather well in robustness as gaming pieces (Bush Wars, too). Then again, I still have a 1/200(?) Noratlas lying around which I am not exactly inclined to start.

Cheers Juergen!  Please do!  :D

I'll be posting some more Cassinga stuff soon, including the full scenario and after-action report following the game at 'Warfare' in November.

Last night I started turning a Cessna 172 into a SAAF Cessna 185A Air Observation Post:

How it looks when it arrives from Shapeways - it's a single-piece 3D-printed model.  I need to turn it from a tricycle-undercarriage configuration into a tail-dragger:

First job: Cut some bits of brass wire to make the landing-gear struts and steal some spare wheels from another kit:

Then bend the ends of the wire at a 45-degree angle and superglue on the wheels:

Snip off the existing undercarriage, sand smooth and then drill holes for the new undercarriage just forward of the wing-strut roots.  Also drill a hole under the tail for the tail-wheel:

Cut the brass wire struts to length and superglue 'em in the 'oles.  Also add a small piece of bent brass wire to form the tail-wheel strut:

Job jobbed!    :D

Now to paint it!
