Culloden Lowland regiments?
« on: September 16, 2019, 08:23:22 PM »
After years of lead hoarding I will finally try to sort out my forces for Culloden. Having Jacobites both in kilt and breeches I would be grateful for any advice on how to organize troops in kilt vs breeches:
1. Which Jacobite regiments were Lowland and would they all be wearing breeches?
2. Would any of the soldiers in Highland regiments be wearing breeches?

Thanks

I'm no expert but most of John Roy Stuarts Division were Lowlanders, of these I think only the Edinburgh Regiment were in the Front line the rest being in reserve. They would almost definitely been wearing breeches and probably bonnets. They had some ex-government troops mixed in as well. The Duke of Perths Regiment is another one that would have featured a mix of Lowland, Highland and ex-government troops. There were quite a few regiments raised in Aberdeenshire and these would probably be counted as lowland such as Kilmarnock's foot guards.  Lord Ogilvy's regiment has two battalions and was raised in Forfarshire and was probably more of a Lowland regiment rather than a Highland one. I'm sure there are more experts around that tell me if I'm wrong.

Atholl's brigade had 2-3 battalions, also Lowlanders. They were 500 men strong at the time of Culloden. There is a book from Helion & Co that deals with the Jacobites, Better the proud plaid. It has a list of the regiments in the Highland and Lowland division.

@traveller: I missed this post. I have the list of each one in the house. I will try and get it on here tonight. Some of regiments would have been mixed like Atholl brigade. Atholl lands crossed the Lowland/Highland divide and men would have been called on from both.

To answer your second question;

IIRC The Penicuik artist (who drew the Jacobite army in Edinburgh prior to its march south) depicted many of the figures in breeches. Only a few had kilts.

I used to have a collection of these drawings in a book with a good narrative about them but I think I gave it so a friend or sold it, so I'm afraid I can't check. Some of them are shown online if you have a good google - the NW Gaidhlig Society has several in their site. The book is called Witness to Rebellion.

Now there is some debate about the drawings, but in terms of clothing at least they're probably quite accurate. It would seem that given half a chance the kilted highlander seems to have jumped into breeches or perhaps trews and kept his plaid for a blanket on the march.

Another point to bear in mind about the plaid was that it may well have been thrown off prior to a charge, with the highlander fighting in his sark. There's a fair amount of wool in a plaid and when it gets wet, it gets heavy.

Anyway....a mix or breeches and kilts for the highlanders would not be inappropriate.
