Looking for Napoleonic era cart and supply wagon drivers/15/18mm
« on: September 24, 2019, 10:07:14 PM »
As the subject indicates I am looking for 15/18mm Napoleonic era cart and supply wagon drivers.  Blue Moon 15s makes a large line of Napoleonic era carts and wagons for their Napoleonic line of figures.  Unfortunately, it does not appear that they have also provided drivers for those carts and supply wagons.  I would appreciate any direction that can be offered regarding any manufacturer that makes appropriate cart and supply wagon drivers.  Thank you.  Richard

I've continued my search, and have discovered some Blue Moon 15/18mm cart and wagon drivers that should work.  They are from the Blue Moon ECW line of 15/18mm figures.  The figures are titled Wagon Conductors and Drivers For Wagons (15WTK-28).  They should work fine for Spain in 1809, but if anyone finds more options I would love to hear about them.

Minifigs (Miniature Figurines) have various limber/wagon drivers in their 15mm Napoleonic catalogue:

ragbones, thank you for taking the time to write, but in looking for cart and supply wagon drivers for my baggage trains in Spain in 1809, the British would probably not be using uniformed drivers, but rather hired civilian support.  That's what makes the ECW conductors and drivers appropriate.  The French had uniformed train personnel (wore uniforms with grey-blue coats with brown facings I believe) though I have little doubt that they hired civilian personnel as well.  A quick review of Funcken's Arms and Uniforms/The Napoleonic Wars Part 1 offered no such uniform for British supply train personnel and their commissaries are under the British Treasury and so had no official military uniforms (based on Osprey's Wellington's Specialist Troops/Men-At-Arms #204)

Richard,

Having recently traveled a similar road, I don't think you are going to find a better source of miniatures to crew your carts and wagons.  While I haven't much interest in Napoleonic miniatures (though I will play and enjoy the occasional read), I do have many of the Bluemoon wagons and a few carts from the range you mention.  I will be adapting them to my Old West.  If you decide you need dead draft horses, one of Bluemoon's packs has them, I believe for the ACW but I don't think too many people are going to quibble about dead horse harness being wrong!  And if they do, well a sad lad, that man.  Just know that in those ECW packs you get basically half seated and half standing.  Not sure the dress is all that accurate for your period but maybe Spain was a cultural backwater at the time.  Still, as far as I know, the best option out there.

FifteensAway, thanks for confirming what I was beginning to believe was the case.  I think you have it exactly right in terms of the ECW figures working because it is 1809 Spain.  In fact, when I saw the figures I thought they would do nicely though I'll probably remove a sword from the waste of the standing figures.  Fortunately, the British and probably the French used oxen as well as horses for draft animals for their supply trains so "conductors" with whips should work fine.  Nonetheless, it is a wonder to me that Blue Moon would make all those supply wagons for their Napoleonics and no drivers.  This collection (the Peninsula in 1809) will be the last of the large 15/18mm collections that I will do that pre-date the 20th Century... kind of sad.  All of my remaining 15/18mm project are 20th Century (WWI, North Africa, late war Pacific, Normandy, and Vietnam) and even those, with the exception of North Africa, are rather small by comparison with most of the 15/18mm collections I have done.

Richard,

I don't know that you need to be sad about moving into smaller collections.  I'd prefer to think that as you wind down on the whole painting front at some point that you can find ways to enjoy all of those so many miniatures you've painted so well over the years.  While your galleries are great, perhaps you can move into the realm of the Narrative Story along the lines of what General Pettygree does, also known as William "Bill" Protz or, as I've dubbed him Gross Herzog von Protz.  I'm betting quite a lot of us out here in the Grand Gaming InterWeb (GGIW) would get quite a kick out your doing so.  And you can enlist your daughter into this with her involvement in the electro-story telling world - if she is willing.

Delayed response from having somehow closed my Show Own Posts option - but that is fixed now.

Not wagons per se but have you looked at the new AB Mule Train Set : https://www.eurekaminuk.com/collections/vignettes-napoleonics/products/mule-train-set-1-18mm. I bought this recently and it's lovely - I found an old Polly Oliver figure that I think will allow me to give four mules per driver:

Hallmark has a range of wagons, horses and drivers for the early 18th century. I use them for various periods. Some are in tricorns, others in round hats wearing what look like smocks. They are small 15s, not 18mm.

Littlearmies, thanks for bringing the mule train to my attention.  It looks good.  As for drivers, I just ordered four packs of the ECW drivers from Blue Moon 15s.  They are generic enough that they will serve my purposes.
