28mm Russian Rolling Stock
« on: October 17, 2019, 09:51:53 AM »
Hi,

I am at the point of building a few more bits of scenery for a 28mm Russian WW2 game and would like to put a railway siding and a few trucks on the table. I have seen TIN sheds masterpiece of an armoured train but don't need that just yet!

What I was wondering was as the Russians used narrow gauge would HO scale track work as a fudge? Also could I use the chassis of the HO rolling stock and just scratch build a larger compartment on top? Has anyone else done this?

Any dimensions for 28mm would be greatly appreciated-I could eyeball it as I only need half a dozen trucks to stand on the table but if someone else has already made some sizes would be a great help.

Thanks in advance guys.

Better have this one moved over to the Railway Wargaming section... ;)

Using normal HO scale track for a narrow gauge line in 28mm might look a bit off. You might find that the ties are a bit out of scale and placed improperly for the look you want to achieve. Building a new shell suitable for 28mm on an HO scale frame is probably pretty reasonable, though you may find that the trucks and wheels are a touch off. I'm not an expert but generally narrow gauge rolling stock would use smaller wheels than their standard (or in your case broad) gauge counterparts. Ultimately since your use for this stuff is wargaming rather than scale model railroading I imagine it would be just fine.

There was an excellent build thread thread on LAF by Alan Sheward who built the Stalingrad Layout for Earlswood Wargames Group.
I cant find the thread at the moment but it ran to many pages.
This included railway carriages and track.

It won best table at least two UK shows in 2018.

There is a video of the finished table here

Hi Guys,

Thanks for those links-what an amazing table! I can onlt dream... I have started a couple of apartment type blocks and hope to have a few more done by Christmas. The vid did prompt me to buy some old rolling sock and track off ebay as well.
Thanks Chaps
