Building a card 15mm scifi grav vehiclr
« on: October 22, 2019, 09:07:42 PM »
Hello again all,
This is how to build a 15mm or any size grav vehicle.
Draw / sketch the outline until you have a general shape
you like , then finalise.
Trial & error is necessary to get a good shape that forms well when bent into shape.
A 0.7mm ball pen & metal scriber is used to score the card & & 0.3mm is used with stencils for the square shapes in this case.An 8mm stapler & a glue pen are very useful also.

If you are happy with a shape remember to copy it before assembling, otherwise it will be a hassle to remake it

Nice.
Didn't realize they were open bottom and I think that is the first time I have seen staples used as staples in a build :D.

Very good idea and approach to making them.

Thanks you my friends,
You can choose to make them open bottomed like their bigger cousins but I decided to do slot in bottoms to make them sturdier
A stapler is an excellent tool for quick building, sort of clamps in woodworking. You can remove the staples once its dried or leave them there & cover them up.
As you can see , much cheaper than kits or 3D , quick to build , free card & easily painted. One can build quite a few in a day with planning.

Having a knowledge of simple 3d geometry helps... I mean a die is simply 6 equal squares joined together. Just keep in mind how you are going to stick them together.

Imagine and you can . ;)

Very cool, man. I can imagine that over time it becomes easier to see the folds and how they will line up before you start creasing or bending.

I think I need some vehicles for my 15mm mining town, so I may give these a whirl and see how they turn out. Maybe work some up on low elevation flight stands of some sort.

Do that Cook.
The beauty of card is that you can do mock ups, fold , staple, see how they measure up, remove staples, fine tune design, then just transfer the final model & build.
And its fun.

Look up Ebbles free paper models to see how they're made.
Great models all...

Here they are all undercoated.
Took me around an hour each from start to finish, cost is negligible & imho they as as great as any shop bought ones. They can easily be converted into flyers by adding wings & engines.

I strongly suggest you try one out. You will never know you can until you do.

3D modelling & printing is challengely nice, building a kit holds its charm also , but believe me scratchbuilding is another dimension altogether ..... and I used to freeze at the mention of it .... my next challenge is doing them in 10 or 6mm..... Hmmmm ;D

Enjoy

Wow! Those Look Great!   :o

Could use some of those cheap plastic gems, in the craft section in many big box stores.

Thanks WM,
No such stores where I live but there's a local  haberdashery
.perhaps they stock them... but they have to be small.
Wait till you see them painted up.....

And here they are all painted. Mostly ink washes & painted by hand. An airbrush is not necessarily needed to paint  vehicles.

Thanks WM, :D
Still need to add weathering and stuff.
You could build a stock of vehicles like these , prime them & paint when the right time comes,
e.g. during winter , when priming & airbrushing is at the whim of the weather ( I have no option but to spray outside )

I have many sketches that I would like to make into models some day.

More to come
