Best rules for solo Vietnam?
« on: November 04, 2019, 01:34:52 PM »
Opinions please.
I will be gaming primarily solo. I have Fistful of Lead, Pulp Alley and FNG 2nd tour. While I love the fluff, I am not really a big fan of the THW system. Any other rules out there that are good for solo gaming? I am aiming at single squad level, very much a skirmish game.

I have just read through the “no end in sight” rules. And have high hopes for them.

You could try Force on Force plus the Ambush Alley book for Vietnam, AA has a set of solo rules built in. I think it’s platoon level though.

Peter Pig have MOCB, square based rules so it may be easy to adapt for solo play.
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

Advanced Recon, by Palladium, for their encounter charts.

I have it, and have looked it over, a very long time ago.  Don't recall what the combat rules are like, but the charts alone make it worth the purchase, even if you use other rules for the combat, and don't use their combat rules, since it is a RPG set.

Ah, I see, you also need the Recon Core Rulebook, or the Revised Recon RPG book for combat, and working out the players' and NPCs' stats.

I've read good things about Grunt too, which is another RPG.  Supposedly, their morale rules are quite realistic for the period.  Don't know much about it otherwise.  This one is all-inclusive.

Indeed. Some years ago i plucked Recon from the net and had it printed. Just my kind of rulebook with the rule being quite simple compared to others. With some practice it makes a pretty fast paced game. It allows or rather encourages to use other info and make this something to really 'get in to'. And there's a chance for humour too. ;-)

I was going to say FNG (there was a new edition in 2019) before I read your post properly.
