Tilting at windmills - terrain for the Peninsular
« on: November 10, 2019, 01:26:49 PM »
I'm far from an expert when it comes to making terrain - some of the buildings I see here are ample evidence of that - but, my stuff generally passes the 'can game with it' test.

Because I'm not a 'professional' terrain maker, I like to keep the building side of things as simple as I can, and I use materials and tools that most people have in their modelling drawer or that they can buy from their local art shop. Consequently, I occasionally do a 'how to' for my blog, taking lots of pictures of what I'm doing as I muddle along.

My latest how to, or rather as I did, is about a Spanish windmill for my peninsular war stuff, though I can also see it (with no historical evidence) appearing in Italian Wars battles too (because I make generic 'Med-terrain').

The post ca be found here:

Pictures of the finished piece:

I just hope you like it, and it passes muster.

Very nice!

Bookmarked for future reference, as i just bought a great deal of models for the peninsular.

Have been hoarding pringles tubes as well, with a project just like this in mind!

Nice work indeed, though I prefer my wood to be of a more worn, darker look.

Thanks, guys.

WN, I know what you mean about the wood - it is quite bright. I'm thinking of toning it darker with an ink wash but, having painted it in enamels I will need to let it dry for a couple of days; if it's not fully dry the ink will not settle properly.

Very fine work, and well suited for the region(s), I think. Hard to know how many of these might have been around or exactly where in the pre photograph era, or how dark the wood was when it was new. This has character!

I think buildings and scenery are often speculative, ambience and character are important goals for me. It helps to convey the narrative of a game.  RB

Amazing! Hmm, the next roll of TP used up, I'll save the tube. I game in 15mm so would need a smaller tube.
