Yes, they were a special police force created to protect the Tokugawa bakufu (military government) in the later 1860’s. There weren’t that many but they were raised from sword schools and were rightly feared.

Aku Soku Zan is their motto and it loosely translates as ‘Kill those who are evil immediately’. There’s still debate whether it was real or not but it sounds suitably dramatic

Brilliant entries both - Loving the Ruga Ruga with their subtle tones and patterns making them very life like.  The Japanese are superbly brilliant and so magnificently set.  Love the writing on the notice board and the bales.  Are these real Japanese characters? because they look it to my unexpert eye.  Is it a subliminal message "vote me"
