Herefordshire VBCW - Battle of Mortimer's Cross

I've put up lots of photos (and text) on the Herefordshire 1938 VBCW Blog of our recent "Big Game", being a hard fought action at Mortimer's Cross (co-incidentally on the same site, of course, as the historic battle of the same name of 2nd February 1461). Police, farmers, Communists, Government forces, all joined by the Automobile Association (including tank!), a scout pack, postmen, some exotic "Corporate Guards" (including the famous "Cadbury's Commandos" and "Fyffes Bulk Import Motor Guard"), plus the first appearance of Luctonians RFC together with their "explosive rugby balls" : all the VBCW goodness can be found starting here:

Love it! Nice to see the Luctonians playing such a prominent part. I have a couple of (very minor) connections with that esteemed club. There used to be discos held in their clubhouse (just over the road from the now-defunct pub) when I was a teen. Seen a lot of punch-ups in that place, though there were never Communists or German paratroopers involved. Additionally, the Luctonians RFC was originally called The Old Luctonians (it was a team founded by former pupils of Lucton School). My father went to Lucton school, and I myself was offered the chance to sit an exam to win a scholarship there (I was a right swot), but I never took the exam, because I didn't want to go to a public school, I wanted to go to the state school in Wigmore where all my friends were going. So in a parallel universe somewhere, Plynkes himself is an Old Luctonian, maybe even a rugby player.

Mrs. Lucton's School for Troublesome and Wayward Girls, from one of my entries in last year's LPL, also took its named from the aforementioned esteemed school:

Obligatory Herefordshire nit-picking: The Old Luctonians rugby club wasn't formed until post-WWII as far as I know, but as usual, who bloody cares?

I'm caught out, Plynkes. You're right, Old Luctonians weren't formed until 1948 - http://www.luctonians.co.uk/club-history/ - but worse, our rugby players were
painted in red jerseys, which is Hereford RFC's colours! (I thought the Luctonians
jersey was rather boring to paint, I'm afraid). So we've just been VBCW and
translated their foundation as a club back 10 years.........

I absolutely love your link to Mrs. Lucton's school. The level of converting and
painting is wonderful!
