Something a little different - Patrol Boat River
« on: December 04, 2019, 12:17:15 PM »
With the completion of the Centurion (Just sunbathing prior to a last fettle and shipping), Mite and Mule and trailer off for check/aproval, PT76 printing, Otter ready for print I'm starting a new project...

I figured I need a break from tracks (though I'm getting pretyt good at them now) and lumpy mishapen cast turrets ( :? ) so I'm next working on a PBR Mk2:  2x 50cals to the front, an M60 to each side and a 50cal on the rear deck, plus a Mk18 grenade launcher somewhere....

I'm hoping it'll be a bit easier mosty as the drawings of boats are far superior to any I've seen for tanks!

Eventually I'll do a Sampan too

This will be an interesting challenge for you. A whole different set of issues. The deck height is often lower than the waterline then there's the added issue of minimum casting depth. And how you alter the hull to accommodate these issues and  maintain the hull profile. ::)

Not too much of a problem here, they are so shallow drafted and v bottomed so the deck height is comfortably above the waterline.  As for casting problems I leave them to Paul lol

The hull is pretty simple really, I don't think it will cause any serious problems.

After reading your post,
had to stop myself from jumping up and down.
Many of us have been waiting years for a PBR.
Very excited to see what you come up with,
Prefect for running up and down river at Hue.

This is great. Your tanks were already very nice, but if you pull this one off, I'd love to get at least one for Spy-Fi games.

I'd be most interested to see how you make the hull shape as it curves towards the bow.

Wow... best not mess it up then... lol

The hull isn't that hard actually ... in theory.

I use a CAD program called Fusion 360 and it has a very handy tool called 'Loft' which takes a series of 2d shapes and extrapolates the 3d shape between them.

With the drawings having the hull profiles and spacings it's just a matter of drawing them, spacing them correctly then 'Loft'ing them to create the shape.  in theory.

In practice it produces something akin to a 3d potato print version and I have to spend ages fixing it ::)

It will be waterline, I'm debating whether it should be at rest or underway... might add an extra  'wedge' of hull that can be added to make it underway.

The idea of an additional wedge of hull is simple and brilliant..  well done.
