Medieval Russian Shield Patterns
« on: December 05, 2019, 09:24:40 AM »
Can you help? I am looking for some painting inspiration for basic shield patterns.  If I have a preference it would be for post 1250.

PS I already have both the main Ospreys.

I've already had one interesting reply over on ANCMED.  I'd still like a few more now it's clear what I'm looking for.  ;)

Good find. I haven't heard of ANCMED up until now so may well join! :)

I painted up a lot of Gripping Beast's Medieval Russians for their website but I was given LBMS shield transfers to use which I'm guessing, unless your a member of the higher nobility, would be far too fanciful.

They are lovely though Martin and I *think* LBMS to 15mm versions of many of the 28mm ranges too.

Thanks for the pointer.  There's a few designs I can simplify and paint on 15 mm shields.  They also help with colour schemes.

PS welcome to ANCMED.

Glad to help. It would be great to see some pics of what you come up with.  8)

PS welcome to ANCMED.

Thanks. It looks to be a very useful resource :)

Perhaps these images will be useful to you. Traditionally taken to represent the shields are red with pictures of animals or Orthodox symbols, but that doesn't mean that it was 8)

The first picture - Russian soldiers and their allies in the battle of lake Peipus. The last picture is the battle of Neva. The rest pictures of the Russians warriors 13-14 centuries

Thanks. I asked as I'm interested in Late 14th Century armours and couldn't place them.

You can use for inspiration of the warriors of the 13th century. For example:
