Vietnam Gun Jeep. Ideas?
« on: December 15, 2019, 02:07:04 AM »
I've always wanted to do a heavily armed, gypised jeep like the one seen in this screen cap from the Sons of Anarchy intro, a la Rat Patrol:

I was thinking of using a Perry SAS WW2 jeep as a proxy and update the weapons and some of the stowage. My crew choice is the West Wind Mutt crew pack.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Corgi make a M151A1 in 1/43 (or thereabouts) which scalewise and vehiclewise are a lot closer to the Vietnam gun jeeps than the WWII version.

Some inspiration here : http://www.vietnam-guntrucks.com/wp-content/gallery/vietnam-gun-trucks-and-jeeps-from-ralph-fuller-lt-ugly-rangers-site/ and https://alu.army.mil/alog/issues/JanFeb06/gun_trucks.html

1/43 (UK O Gauge) is going to be large.

Beetles in 1/56 (Company B), 1/48 (Tamiya) and 1/43 (cheap die cast)

Gringos does an M151 in 1/48 scale.
The following are an Empress 1/50, Warlord 1/56 and Rubicon 1/56 WW2 jeeps.

Empress British Modern crew in Empress 1/50 jeep.

And for Carlos, the contractual obligation William Killian scale shot.

I do hope that Rich H is looking at a gun jeep.

Smaller than the 1/35 SAS jeep though!

EDIT The Perry one is 1/56 I think. I was thinking of the Tamiya one.... nothing to see here... :o

I was surprised when it was quoted as 1/43.

The M48 by Corgi has been stated as 1/48 elsewhere in this sub-forum.

I think Corgi has several versions of the Willys jeep. The only thing I know is that the ”Fighting machinrs” version is a suitable scale

Sadly, all I can find is multiple versions of the recoiless rifle one. Though thats easy to remedy.

I think my West Wind crew is made to fit the Corgi vehicles. I know the Guntruck crew and riders fit the truck well.

Having never watched Sons of Anarchy, I have no idea about the back story to the pic but are you sure it’s a Vietnam era shot?

Blurry as the image is, it looks a lot a Grenada (1983) era gun jeep. The Rangers and elements of the 82nd Airborne  tricked out their MUTTs as specialised gun jeeps and loaded them down with extra gear. They also welded a wire cutting bar to the front, which appears to be the case on the rear vehicle. The Rangers were even wearing plain, green, Vietnam era utilities and M1 steel pots in Grenada, so photos from that time look a bit like Vietnam. There was little need for long range jeep patrols in Vietnam and longer range recce patrols were usually inserted by choppers.

If you want a Vietnam era ‘jeep’ armed or otherwise, you would be better off buying the Gringo 40 one or waiting for Empress. Verlinden also make a 1/48 Mutt, the appropriate Vietnam M151 A1 version. You could even make an armoured version by adding panels of plastic card armour.

Thanks guys.

Yes Carlos, the backstory of the motorcycle club is it was started by 9 Nam vets. That said, it could very well be a subbed Grenada shot, but not entirely sure.

Empress will have the 1/50 Mutt out next year with the M60 mount. Should be in the first quarter.

The Mighty Might will also have an M60 mount when its released in January.  ;)
