Just to be clear: you can start your builds whenever. You do not need to wait till Jan 25th.

I am going to have to put some color on the inside of my greenhouse before I can add the vegetation - should I just quit posting pics when I start the vegetation?

It's a bit early to say, as it depends on the drop out rate. I like to group entries in groups of four to five and have the winners proceed to finals. With almost 30 contestants we could have semifinals and then finals.

What I really like with the BSC is that we get to follow how builders go from vision to execution. With this theme there are several specific problems which need to be solved when making broken things. How do they come apart as the rust, crumble, break and crash...

Mine is going to be boring CAD to start with I'm afraid....  then boring print.... 
Then attack with WMD (Well a dremel then chemicals)
