BSC2020 marianas_gamer Lost Pacific Ruin
« on: December 23, 2019, 04:10:47 AM »
I have needed a Pacific ruin for a proposed campaign game and this seems to be the chance to get it together. I am going to need something that can be a focus on my table and at the same time be generic enough to be used in Hawaii, Pohnpei, and reasonably believable in Pulp and Cthuluesque settings. Per usual, I will base the ruin on a backed cork mat. The ruin will consist of a series of terraces set against a hill side with masonry reinforcement and stone walls. If I have time I will make some vegetation. I do not envision any remnant superstructures on the built up terraces except maybe a few decayed posts. There will probably be at least one ki'i to show that the area is kapu. If I have extra time I may try to have some exposed bedrock in a yard with petroglyphs pecked in.
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

Here is a general plan of what I expect the ruin complex to look like when I finish.

Here is the plan next to the cork mat I will use as the base.

I toddled down to one of the ABC stores the other day to pick up a ki'i for this build. These stores sell to tourists and always have a bunch on hand. No idea why they stock these other than they represent the exotic other. Ki'is or tikis were not a Chamorro thing. They are Polynesian from WAY out further east in the Pacific. I chose this fellow for his fierceness, not sure but he might be a representation of Ku.

I have started my initial board prep and cork cuts. First I trimmed the edges of the backed cork mat.

It would be overstating it to say that I beveled it  ::)  The cork wasn't glued down all that well and was a bit dry as well. You sure can't tell that I cut it with a new exacto blade from all the tearing and cruddy cuts made >:(
Next, I cut the initial base layers to define the courtyard and start to building up the heiau compound.

I was much happier with these cork tiles and how they cut. Next I cut three layers for the crescent shaped hill on which the ahu (altar) and heiau (temple) and the priest's residence or ruins thereof will be constructed. I am not sure if three layers are enough at this point and am leaning toward cutting one more. My reporter Ernie is on the spot to give you an idea of the scale of the build.

Here is another shot of the same with the ki'i in place to give you an idea of it's size as well.

Next up is a lot of gluing.

I am much remiss in posting any updates, because well, there haven't been. Dealing with hip pain and pain meds  o_o o_o has put me into low gear but I am trying to rally. So here is my base cut but not yet glued down.

I haven't yet decided whether I am going to cut into the front and put in a stone staircase or just a broken ladder.  I hope to get the heiau and ahu roughed out. Then I will apply plastic stone texture sheet to some portions and start working on making "polished river stones" out of spackle. If I really build up a head of steam I will start to spackle the "earthen portions" of the build. It felt really good to get back to work on this
