Plastic old West minis?
« on: December 24, 2019, 08:06:29 PM »
The title says it all. Some guys in my area were talking about doing a campaign Using the old gw Old West rules, and I have been looking around for minis, and I was wondering if there were any companies doing any plastic minis that could work for it? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It might not be what you want, but you can get loads of Wild West stuff very cheaply in 1/72:

http://plasticsoldierreview.com/PeriodList.aspx?period=30

I've recently started using 1/72 rather than 28mm for fantasy RPGs, because of the range of huge historical humans available, the speed of painting up NPCs and the "anonymity" that you get at that scale (against the "we killed that goblin last week" syndrome that you get with good 28s). If you base 1/72 plastics on pennies or washers, you get all the stability that you need (and damage-free transportation in boxes lined with magnetic card). And the (low) cost is eye-opening; you can get 40-50 figures for about £7. And all the ranges seem to scale nicely with each other.

The other thing I've found is that 1/72 stuff paints up much better than I would have imagined - and much more quickly than either 15s or 28s. So I'd highly recommend it for dabbling in a new genre or period.

I do own some 1\72 minis and agree with you about the advantages of the smaller scale, this would be a 28 mm campaign however, so while I appreciate the suggestion, it’s not what I’m looking for right now.

I think there are a couple of Old West Cowboys in the Reaper "Bones" range.

There is always the Perry’s American Civil War figures, which could possibly be adapted.

You could always go with a larger scale as well. The cheap cowboys and indians plastic toys have been around forever and  paint up well with some prep work. Wash in hot, soapy water, then when dry cover with matte modpodge to seal the plastic. Then paint like normal. There are lots of 54mm or 1/32 scale old west/civil war figures available as well. Oh, and you can get real cheap wagons at the dollar stores in western adventure type packs.

My buddy and I have often talked about the lack of numerous "popular" skirmish game miniatures.  I'm surprised a single company has not tackled the variety of "buy one box" minis that could be pretty popular.  Old West would be one, a box of folks on foot, one on horseback, etc.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Agreed, even just a box of conversion/kitbash bits (arms, heads, weapons etc.) would be good. Could even double for post-apoc and modern games too.

Years ago I bought some recasted and rescaled copies of Airfix cowboys and Indians that were originally 54mm.

These are 28mm scaled.  I’m sure they were from a dollar store.  I have no idea the maker but you may search on eBay for something like that.

Old Glory makes some very nice Western figures and they are not expensive.  Especially with the OG Army membership.
