"Rule Britannia" - the war-game: a Resistance sentry 28/12/2019
« on: December 28, 2019, 02:10:31 PM »
I blame Steve Blease, he mentioned the novel by this notable British fantasy and science fiction author back in the early days of the Society of Fantasy and Science Fiction Wargamers (1993 or thereabouts).

It had an intriguing premise and when it was republished in 2004 I bought a copy.

For reasons of decorum, we will not be discussing the backstory. Read the book (or the precis on Wikipedia), but please do not stress the moderators on the forum. Thank you.

A sentry guards a meeting of the local resistance cell, keeping an eye out for USUK forces or their collaborators.

Though the sun is shining on the Cornish village, storm clouds are gathering.

A Bad Squiddo Land Army figure in front of a Sarrisa terraced house.

The WW2 figure does not look out of place for a mid-70's campaign and the figure matches well with the figure range I will be using for the majority of USUK forces.

Can anyone remember a book title, which was about a European Invasion of England, set iirc round the 50 or 60s, sure the title was something along the lines of Don't tell the soldiers. Always stuck in my mind the premis of the book, but not the actual title. Mentioned French Paras fighting in Trafalgar Square.

Are you sure you are not thinking about:

That is a clever invasion scheme.

There is a whole genre of invasion literature, interestingly enough one of them is by the uncle of Daphne.

The Invasion of 1910 is one of the most famous.

Even PG Wodehouse had a go:

Cornish village? Is she waiting to pot Doc Martin or does she just want Rick Stein’s recipe for scampi?

Nicely done, both shotgun toter and house.

Ah, you have missed the lunchtime Police Procedural .

The ringleader is Jane Kennedy, she know all the ways to kill a person.

You’re right, dodged that particular bullet. Still I suppose it couldn’t be worse than Midsomer, where the body count puts the Mexican drug war to shame.

Well there is that small town just north of Auckland that is racking up the body count (or 'across the water there is 20s or '60s Melbourne not forgetting'50s Ballarat).

Actually you could do a Home Counties version of The Zone in Midsomer. No one would notice any difference in the death toll.
Suggested titles:
  • Midsomer: All Out War
  • The Purge: Midsomer
Now I need to base the rest of the Land Army. Has anyone seen the Warlord Women's archery squad in the flesh? Are they any good (not sure if Hasslefree's Jennifer is in period).

Must be the season. I have been inspired by "it happened here", SS GB and Dominion. To do some resistance in a Rump UK. But I am thinking of setting it in the AVBCW time line. The bad men in black won the Civil war!   :o
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.
