Broadening the Fantasy collection (SS&SS made me do it!)
« on: December 29, 2019, 01:14:28 AM »
Hi,

for christmas I got myself my own copy of Sellswords&Spellslingers. Played the game several times with friends over the past year and greatly enjoyed it.
As with everybody who gets this set of rules I thought "oh, this is great, I can finally use all my fantasy stuff!". Only to realize that "my fantasy stuff" is plenty, but kinda monochromatic - a large Warhammer army of Dark Elves and a smaller army of Warhammer Empire.

So I guess I'll need some more variety in my Fantasy collection. My mates already have stunningly wide collections of stuff, so my main goal is to get my own collection a bit broader while concentrating on stuff they might not have as much of yet. Oh, and I'll try to stick to what I got in storage already too.

For now I thought it would be a nice idea to have some generic baddies at hand. So I grabbed one of the boxes of the absurdly nice and absurdly fiddly Wargames Factory skeletons I got a bunch of years ago and put some of them together.

I've always been a big fan of 'naked' skeleton warriors. The more bare-bones the better. These here will get some hoplite round shields as well once I got some fitting decals. I may have to buy those, because I really can't be bothered to freehand them. The paintjob's a bit rushed, but seeing as these are really just generic cannonfodder baddies it will do.

So much for those right now. Next I plan to do some Warhammer beastmen and maybe some zombies after that. I'd prefer to do something more light-hearted like Marauder goblins or stuff like that, but I don't own those, and apart from that, my mate virago already has an amazing collection of mid-1990s Orcs and Goblins. So I'll stick to the minis I already have, as per the plan.

Hope you like the skeletons so far!

Nice job on the skeletons. My (already extensive) fantasy collection has expanded considerably since I discovered Sellswords.

@Sunjester: I bet! The thing is that, since SS&SS lets you do anything, all of a sudden every single 28mm, 20mm and 40mm fantasy miniature is considered an option. It's a slippery slope!

@Bloggard: Either that or it's gonna end me. :p

@OSHIROmodels: Cheers!

@AKULA: Many thanks for droppying by and commenting!

@Swordisdrawn: Thank you! Painting them probably didn't take much longer than putting the guys together. :p

Things might be spiralling out of control now...

Lovely skeletons. Very classic ‘Argonauts’, never a bad thing.

Lovely set of rules too. As well as being solo or co-op, it’s nice painting small interesting batches. A few goblins here, maybe a few zombies, then an ogre as palate cleanser. Keeps things fresh and varied.

My only wish is (much as I could enjoy 4 Against Darkness) that they could release another SS book now and then.

Usually my instant reply is "baah, Sellswords&Spellslingers has everything you need in the book, why would we need any supplements?", but ...yeah, it would be nice to get something new on top. ;) 4AD is an amazing, unique thing, but to be honest I haven't played it since 2 weeks after the release.

That skeleton pic reminds me of this:

@FramFramson: :D Yeah, well, they are  funny. Always laughing, dancing, ...

Here's an update on the beastmen warband I'm currently very hastily painting up:

I just don't know how you paint so quickly considering the amazing quality of your paintwork! You're obviously some kind of sorcerer or you've made infernal deals with devils! That's what I'm telling myself, anyway. Joking aside, fabulous work sir!

@Gibby: Thanks very much. :) Well, I have no life what so ever and I cut corners on the painting. The backsides of these minis for instance are all bare metal and plastic. Well, except for the butts. Painting hairy cheeks gives me a sense of enormous well-being.  lol ).

Two, I think. :)

To be fair, I didn't leave the primer to dry for nearly enough time. :D and they're far from being finished of course.
