Congo Conflict
« on: December 31, 2019, 12:56:26 AM »
I have been slowly working on the Congo Conflict ca 1960-3, with Britannia and TAG minis, mostly painted. Die cast jeeps with MGs, French? army trucks and armored vehicles.  Anyway I came across "Dark of the Sun" movie and it reinvigorated me with a whole new campaign.  AH, before you say it - it is NOT the Bruce Willis movie but starring Rod Taylor and Jim Brown.  Filmed some in the Congo involving diamonds, a train, truck chase, airplane attack, and loads of Simbas appearing like the Britannia Simba figures armed with just made bows, spears and modern weapons.  Just what I needed to move this to completion and onto the table.  The scenarios I can create from this movie will precede what I can make from "The Wild Geese" and maybe the Willis version to follow last.  Now to get my hands on the Wilbur Smith novel of the "Dark of the Sun".

By Willis movie, are you referencing Tears of the Sun?  Good movie.

Yes, its a great movie, good action. I mistakenly thought it was based off Smith's book.

I am slowly working on this sort of thing as well.  A fascinating period.  Working on a Sloppy Jalopy Ferret armoured car right now.  Still wondering what rules to use.

I have worked up a set based on The Sword and the Flame entitled the machete and the flame. Seems to work for me.

You want to read Mike Hoare’s 5 Commando ( Congo mercenaries?) - brutal but interesting.

A couple of years ago I used Force on Force with the Bush Wars supplement. There is a dedicated Congo Road to Stanleyville linked set of scenarios which led to a couple of very good and close games. Unfortunately lost the gaming venue and never did make it to Stanleyville. . .  . :(

Another book worth a read: 'Mad Dog killers; The story of a Congo Mercenary' by Ivan Smith
