The Third Engagement: A race for the gates...

Regular viewers will remember that the French, on their way to rendezvous with the Scottish host, had discomfited an English castle's garrison, causing them to flee back towards the open gates.

In this episode, we zoomed in again, to watch as the last of the routers headed for the gate pursued pell-mell by the French.

With the French hard on their heels, the routers made it to the unfinished palisade outwork.

The rest of the garrison sallied out and formed a rough line to halt the French...

Jeanne de Vienne, the French commander, realising a head-on assault will be costly, swings his horse around the flank, racing for the open end of the unfinished palisade, and turns the English line.

Despite a stout defence, de Vienne slays their commander, & the English are put to the sword.

Yet another success for de Vienne's expeditionary force. The French are now well supplied with horses & coin ahead of the next battle.

The English field army cannot arrive soon enough.

The Fourth Engagement - A Bloody Ambish

The main English army advances up the great North Road. In the vanguard are John of Gunat, and the newly-made Dukes of Nottingham and Buckingham.

Jean de Vienne's French contingent burst from the woods in ambush!

With crossbowmen blocking the English path & attacking their left flank, Jean de Vienne launches a spirited charge against the English men-at-arms.

Shock & awe in their favour, Vienne's nobles drive the English k'nigitts against the Duke of Nottingham's company, & routs them!

But in the ensuing fight against the English foot, quelle dommage, the great Admiral of France is killed!

The English column turns to face the threat to their flank.

The new French commander, le Sire de Baccarat, seeks to avenge his fallen Lord with a desperate vharge against the English Commander's retinue.

Seizing the initiative they break their enemy, and Gaunt is swept away in ignominious flight

Turning swiftly to their flank, the French attack Nottingham and breaks his force too.

So yet another victory for the French, but at what cost? The small French force lost their commander & a fair few of their finest knights.

By contrast, Gaunt has been made to look foolish but his firce is still quite strong, & the rest of the English force is not far behind.

Thanks!

Life has gotten in the way of the completion of this campaign. We have two more engagements to go, Watch this space.

Hopefully we can get back to this soon, with Rob and I planning one more skirmish encounter, followed by a final large battle.

Fingers crossed for the Scots and the French.
