Granted, we play skirmish size battles, but we've used Chris Peers' Contemptible Little Armies with success and it has an East Africa supplement that includes rules things like wild animal attacks and such on the battlefield:

http://brigadegames.3dcartstores.com/Contemptible-Little-Armies-Lists-2-Africa-Middle-East-1914-1918_p_1637.html

There are some definite holes in the 3rd edition rules, particularly around vehicles, but they've worked well for Africa.

joekano,

Interesting recommendation.  I know rules rarely really require a scale (the 28 mm is probably because Peers was pretty obviously working for figure manufactures peddling that scale - and nothing wrong with that) but will the rules work for 15 mm?  Also, can the rules adapt to multiple figure bases?  How large are units?  In essence, can you provide more information about the rules, please?  $25.00 core rules +$ 18.00 supplement means $43.00 for the rules.  Going to want to know more before crossing that bridge (that's the cost of 100 or more figures in 15 mm, more or less).

Thanks!

I use black powder with a sheet of mods. Works brilliantly and is fast.

I'll mangle the spelling, no doubt, but how about a figure for a 15 mm Meinegehartzen - the British spy guy who went ashore at Tanga?  Any ideas?

It's Meinertzhagen. I can't help with figure recommendations, but there are plentiful images of him online, some of which show him wearing a fez, though I don't know where these were taken.

Meinertzhagen " the silently Laughing Man"
Very much enjoyed reading of him, so much that I visited Tanzania in the '90's.
Sadly never made it to the Kaiserhoff in Tanga.

I used Over the Top by GDW and the Novak version for GEA.
I had (British) 15mm Minifigs 8 figs (4 stands) per company.
32 figs per battn (16 stands) plus mg stand and CO.
I had 6 bttns of Indians and two IIRC of British.

The Germans I had 8 figs  (4 stands) of infantry, mg stand and Co OC stand.

And I had about a regiment to represent the South Africans.

I found the rules worked quite well. Anything above a Division and I felt they would creak and grind.
We had a few games, inspired by Tsavo and Taveta and Iringa.
I haven't played them in nearly 19 years and think maybe it's time to give it all a spin again.
As I am now older I might read/understand them more/differently, seeing little subtleties which I didn't notice before.
Sadly I never got any photos should do something about that as I still have all the figs and 10mm buildings.
Thank you for this thread.
They would be my choice again for a battle in GEA.

Thanks, deflatermouse, for the recommendation.  I went ahead and ordered Over The Top.  Not so much because I'm sold on them yet but because there was a copy for sale on line for under $30 US and all the others were A LOT more than that.  Now watch, I'll be at a miniatures swap meet soon and someone will be selling them for $5!   lol

And, joekano, still analyzing Contemptible Little Armies as time permits - not nearly enough of late.
