Dark Lord Andrew's Evil Minions
« on: January 14, 2020, 09:24:35 PM »
Hello everyone.

In what is totally not a New Year hobby resolution, I've been painting things. Specifically, making a start on the many, many unpainted old metal Warhammer figures I've collected over the years - mostly chaos warriors, goblins and skaven, with the odd elf and dwarf thrown in.

I decided that rather than try and make a number of different armies or warbands (that just leads to more ebay purchases...), I'd just paint whatever I felt like painting, using a consistent rusty metal method, basing method and a limited palette to tie them all together. They will all serve the Dark Lord Andrew!

I also want to paint things fairly quickly so will be using a lot of washes, with only the odd base colour highlight when necessary. I do not enjoy highlighting so will do anything to do as little of it as possible.

So far, I've painted a trio of Kev Adams gobbos (the boss was the first figure to test the metal technique) and a hulking great big Jes Goodwin Nurgle lord. Next will likely be some lowly night goblins for everyone to bully.

Hope you like them!

Those metals are really, really nice Andrew.

OUTSTANDING! They are all splendidly evil little characters. The background adds to the effect & enhances you beautiful brushwork. VERY WELL DONE!

Thanks, it's super easy.

Just Army Painter Plate Metal for the steel and Vallejo Metal Color Gold for the goldy bits, washed with Nuln Oil, washed again with Agrax Earthshade (I don't wash the chainmail with Agrax though), then a wash of Nuln/Agrax/Lahmian Medium over everything including chainmail. Then some rust spots with a reddy brown/Lahmian mix, verdigris with Nihilakh Oxide/Lahmian (go easy and if necessary tone it down with Nuln/Agrax/Lahmian). Finally sponge and edge highlight with the base colours.

If I can work out the Vallejo Metal Color equivalent of Plate Metal I might switch to that though. The gold is the best metallic I've ever used.

Chain Mail (053) in VGC, Natural Steel (864) in VMC:

( very handy conversion chart ).  ;)
Some excellent painting btw. Might try out your metals...

That Vallejo Model Color, not Vallejo Metal Color.  :)

I did get VMetalC Steel, but it’s more of a 'boltgun metal' dark steel.

Very nice indeed, makes me want to go out and pick up that gold, I don't think GW has anything quite as nice.

How'd you do the goblin flesh?

I strongly recommend the gold. I was astounded when I tried it out and now want to paint everything gold. lol It’s an airbrush paint so is thin but brushes on really well with great coverage. Two coats and you’ve got an amazing shiny base coat. It also seems to level out for a smooth coat, but without flooding details.

The skin is really simple too, just Vallejo Model Color Middlestone, washed with Agrax, then highlighted with the base colour. The icon gobbo has an extra highlight with a touch of white added to the Middlestone, while the gong gobbo had an extra wash of Cadian Fleshtone before the highlight. In future I might do this after the highlight, using various washes, to vary to skin tones more between figures.

amazing.

you're sponging off some of the wash - can't imagine how you do that so neatly / cleanly.

The sponging is done with the base metal colour, after all the washes are dry. I really would make a mess otherwise! :)

oh right - still would have to see you doing that - very neat technique. Anyhow, they look fantastic.
