Figures to convert into 28mm aliens
« on: January 15, 2020, 09:41:55 PM »
I'm looking for 30-40 homogenous aliens , ideally a mix of civilian and military types.

Have struggled to find any suitable models so have the idea of matching 28mm dwarven bodies with some alien heads from Shapeways.

Chose dwarves as they are different enough from normal humans but anyone have any alternative ideas?

Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

Lizardmen are always a good bet for aliens, I think. The likes of GW lizardmen have fairly convincing non-human anatomy, and the fact that they're scaly and (to the casual human observer) sexless means that a lack of (much) clothing doesn't really matter.

On top of that, you can mix and match manufacturers with impunity, suggesting a variety of sub-species or castes - something like the Gloranthan dragonewts, only with a higher degree of technology:

Homogenous basing, motifs and skin patterns could give you a complex-looking civilisation pretty quickly. And it's very easy to convert plastic fantasy lizardmen into sci-fi equivalents. Their pulp origins take them half-way to sci fi to begin with!

Good recommendation on the lizardmen.

I have all the Colony87 figures but I need a lot of similar figures rather than individuals.

As Ultravanillasmurf says, the snakemen are certainly a good bet:

And you could consider them as, say, an administrative caste with (e.g.) GW lizardmen as warriors or servants or whatever.

Not sure if they are still available, but GW Skinks might work.

[Edit - ho ho ho - Skinks not skunks]

There are loads of cool (and fairly cheap) aliens in the Rebs line:

Vodkafan did a nice alien by putting a cow's head on a human torso.
(see 'Fight at Yb-Gur' sorry but I am no use for things like links).

Another way to go might be just to use human miniatures but to paint them exotic colours. The War Factory blog had some excellent examples here.

Blue or violet skin and blank eyes, for example, could give you some effective options. And that might make it easier to find a varied cast. Plus, there's lots of sci-fi precedent for extremely human-like aliens.

There are always the Frostgrave gnolls if you want some feliform aliens, or the Mantic salamanders for reptilians:

I'm intrigued by this. Can you share a bit about this project? What are you working on that requires a veritable city populated by a single alien species?

I've worked on a few 3D sculpts as a goof. Same species, one is armed one isn't. I don't suppose something like this would fit the bill would it?
