First unit of French Longbow completed, lots of completed units off the desk this weekend, so expect lots of pictures over the next 20 days or so.

Agreed! French archers definitely seem to get overlooked despite being a big chunk of the French (and Burgundian) forces at the time, so always good to see them represented!

Keep up the great work!

A bit of an educated guess for the time period 1415-1429 on which the Perry HYW range is based; excluding the numbers of actual English archers, most of the bowmen around who fought for the French would have probably been Norman or Scottish, with a smattering of English Archers from the 'mercenary' companies. There is certainly a wealth of evidence of Scottish archers fighting the English and making a very good show of themselves at Verneuil 1424. It wasn't until the Estates General in 1439, a law in which any Mercenary Companies in France were forced by order of the King to join the Royal army as Compagnies d'ordonnance or face literal destruction. I think that this legislation would have gathered English, Scottish and 'mercenary' bowmen together and possibly have been the beginning of the French toying with using archers en masse.

This is my recollection from the literature. I would have to dig deeply into the likes of Sumption and others again gain a more accurate (personal) picture, a foreboding task but nonetheless one that is probably worth a look at.

No doubt Matt will have some degree of knowledge of stuff that I may have overlooked.

Yes, smaller companies than the mixed crossbow and pavisiers, I still have not found a reference to them being used enmasse like the English, possibly because of the smaller numbers. They certainly made a big contribution along with the Scots at Baugé and Verneuil. At la Brossinière and Fresnay seemed to be used as a harassing skirmish line. Certainly in full swing by the ordinance period of the French Army.
I have a reference for Guy of Laval purchasing 600 welsh made bows and staves early in 1400.

Agreed. It's often overlooked at just how literally mercenary soldiers could be during the dynastic struggle we refer to the HYW.

After I complete the bathroom renovation, everything is under cover because of the dust that is generated from the new plaster walls and roof. So about two weeks or so. I have 18 odd United competed just need to finish fitting flags etc

Completed my first Perry English HYW archers for my post Agincourt English.

Note the yellow flowers, “ planta genista” a common weed in Maine, Normandy, Brittany and Anjou. Some people may know this is how Geoffrey de Anjou gained the nickname “Plantagenet” due to his wild sowing of oats (children) throughout the region.

After Agincourt peace the English used their Chateau bases on the Normandy Maine border, Avaranches, Mortain, Domfront, Alençon, and Fresnay to raid into Maine and Brittany at will. Some of these raids were very successful but a turn around first at the battle of Baugé then la Brossinière, lead to a resurgent and confident western Armagnac French force to then blunder at Verneuil and suffer complete destruction of the western French and Scottish allied army.

Figures are 28mm from the Perry Miniatures Agincourt to Orleans range
