Escape from Colditz - Revisited a Classic Board Game!
« on: January 22, 2020, 11:26:18 PM »
Last Monday we played ‘Escape from Colditz' (original version) and enjoyed a rollicking night featuring a total of ten escape attempts, a dead British Lieutenant, four successful 'home runs' (escapes) and the transfer of several German Guards to the Eastern Front. We decided this game is so much fun we'll play it twice a year instead of the one time we currently plan for!

Lieutenant Carothers meets a sticky end!

Captain Smithers escapes, you can hear the champagne corks pop (in Switzerland!)

A detailed AAR for the game is here

Cheers

Much nostalgia there! I need to get my set out of the roof and play it again.

I've only played the amiga game, but I loved that (even if I was too young to fully understand it)

Indeed. Great fun and takes me back about 40 years lol

I’ve played the recently re-released version (which I think is pretty much an exact facsimile of the original, although maybe slightly shinier) a few times with chums recently.
It’s a great game, tactical and engrossing, although can be very frustrating.
There are also one or two slight ambiguities in the rules - or at least that’s what we found.
But overall, a very good game and a real shot of nostalgia :)

So very cool.

Weirdly, it is quite cool.
(Especially when you play the theme tune from the classic 70s TV series to start the game lol)

Yeah, just looking again at my pics against Captain Darling’s original board, the new version has clearly had rather more graphic design and Stalag flavour lavished on the board and cards. In all other respects it seems to mimic the 1970s original.

It looks fun :)

A thought, would replacing the wooden game pieces with 15mm WWII models be worthwhile?

Paint the pieces, like little peg soldiers!

Hi All!

Thanks for the replies!

The new version certainly has improved graphics and from looking on Boardgamegeek an updated set of rules. The original rules have issues but we play for fun so if something comes up we ‘wing it’  :) ...

Re replacing pawns that’s definitely possible and if your budget stretches to it I’ve been advised Foundry have a set just for the game...

A great game, still have an original copy, although the board is a little warped.

There was a 28mm game of this at Salute one year, and there's been other brilliant efforts: http://miniaturasjm.com/wargame-historico/terreno-de-juego-escape-from-colditz-escala-28mm/

Our club plays this the last meet before Christmas every year.  Always a good laugh and lots of fun.  Glad to see that other folks are having fun with it too.

Learned today that Colditz was previously also a psychiatric clinic where amongst others the composer Schumann resided. Makes you think.
