S.H.O.D.D.Y. 40k (Cheap Sci-Fi Tank)
« on: January 23, 2020, 11:17:29 PM »
Startank Holdings Ordnance Depot and Delivery Yards (SHODDY) have started production of their new Model 40,000 battle tank.  SHODDY has a long but undistinguished history and has only managed to stay one step ahead of a stream of product liability claims and health and safety prosecutions over the years through frequent name changes and regular relocations. Currently based on a Forgeworld on the edge of the Imperium, the new tank is in fact a slightly updated version of the company’s first ever armoured vehicle, produced in the 1930s for use in the British Civil War (see : http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=121952.0).

Brand new SHODDY 40,000s roll off the production line.

Despite the fact that the original Mark 1 was generally considered a bit rubbish even back in 1938, the SHODDY Directors have reasons to believe that the design could be a success in the 41st Millenium. Consider:

• A gun so inaccurate its maximum effective range is only around 100m (or 72 inches at 1/56 scale) - perfectly adequate for the futuristic battlefield;
• Slow speed and frequent breakdowns - mobility is less of a concern when most battles consist of both sides lining up in front of each other within shouting distance and blasting away;
• Thin armour - Why do you need armour when you have the blessing of the Emperor/gifts of Nurgle/the benefit of Reanimation Protocols (delete as appropriate)?
• A turret so small it surely cannot accommodate both the breach of the main armament and the crew - 38,000 years after the SHODDY MK1, this is now turret design orthodoxy;
• A very reasonable price - In fact buyers can acquire 52.42 SHODDY 40,000s for the cost of one Leman Russ (at current UK  prices) making it attractive to Adeptus Mechanicus bean-counters and frugal xenos invaders alike.

Grizzled old-timers kick some tyres.

I have shamelessly stolen Leadboy's idea from his VBCW thread and will shortly distribute my shipment of SHODDY 40,000s to friends and family with instructions to "40k-ify" their vehicle.  At this stage I cannot guarantee that anything worthwhile will come of this exercise (none of us are proper AFV modellers and only a few of us are even technically adults), but I will keep you posted...

A new customer clearly delighted with his purchase.

So glad you took the concept through to the 41st Millennium and trust you
can hear my (slightly deranged) giggling from here. Can't wait for the photos
- but even more so, can't wait for the tabletop moment (it will happen)
when a "Shoddy" brews up a Baneblade/viciously expensive GW manufactured
super-tank (with extra skulls)!

As a postscript, thanks also for establishing the Shoddy/GW "exchange rate"
as hovering roughly around 53/1. I assume that the 40K Worlds must have
an intergalactic stock exchange at which this "key market indicator" is closely
watched, particularly as the CEO of Shoddy's stock options are no doubt fixed
(favourably) against this rate. I'd very much like to see a tabletop with, on the
one hand, GW Fanboy A with 1 Leman Russ, and on the other, Grizzled Gamer
B with 53 "Shoddy" Tanks!!

Wachaza - mine was listed as:

"10x Military Tank Model Heavy Tank Sand Table Model Home Decor Pocket Toys"

Not sure what the "Home Decor" bit was about though.

Looking now it appears that prices may have even gone down since I ordered, which throws my SHODDY 40k/Leman Russ price ratio calculation out!

Started my first bodge. I was originally inspired by a picture of a SiG33B, but actually it looks a bit like that Valentine variant with a 25 pounder. Anyway, the idea is that sometimes a short fat gun is better than two long thin ones.

Not sure which faction this will be.  Anyone know how to make/model rivets at vaguely this scale?

Are you thinking of the Bishop?

There are multiple options for rivets:
  • Slice pieces of plastic rod
  • Drill hole and insert piece of plastic rod - you can shape the top of the rivet before fitting
  • Dots of glue
  • Strips of preformed rivets cut from sheets of Slaters' plastic sheet
  • 3d transfers from Archers
[li]Moulded rivets, such as by Zinge Industries or Grandt Line

I have listed and given examples for several ways to make rivets.  This should give you some more options on top of the ones already given.

Reminds me of the AT70 Reaver.

https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/AT70_Reaver_Battle_Tank

Interesting! It certainly shows there is room in the lore for obsolete or less successful designs, and for those designs to have a significant role in certain situations. A commander facing an Imperial Baneblane, may wish he had a super heavy tank too, but if all he has got is a SHODDY he has to make the best of it (possibly by using it to distract the enemy while a squad with satchel charges creeps up behind).

And a lot depends on the opposition, of course. It is said that the SHODDY Directors were proud to hear that during the pacification of the Upper Volta system (in particular during the climactic battle on the Umboto Gorge Sector) a SHODDY was in the teeth of the action taking out several "peace-loving" Space Pygmies before eventually being knocked out by a lucky strike from a well aimed guava half.
