Marshal Ney...
« on: January 25, 2020, 12:09:47 PM »
More than a tad disappointed by this offering of a figure I was looking forward to. Marshal Ney in Russia has been done before, at least as well, if not better than this one.

Why not a disheveled and exhausted Ney, hatless, with a broken sword...

"Come and see how a Marshal of France dies!"

 :)

"Wot did you do in the war Grandad?"

"I was with Harry... At The Bridge!"

I'm a big fan of the 'Giants in Miniature' range, when they nail 'em they nail 'em good. Sadly, only thing I can say about their Napoleonic offerings so far is...

"I never saw so many shocking bad hats in my life!

That would be Ney at Waterloo, not Russia.  ;)
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Ney got hold of Brue's brigade, the last unbroken line infantry in the French army and threw them away in a dramatic and senseless counter-attack, leaving just a few Old Guard battalions for a rear guard.

If you wanted to see that marshal of France die, you had to be in a Bourbon firing squad.

If memory serves didn't Marshal Ney give the firing squad their orders himself? I've seen that original painting in Sheffield's Mappin Art Gallery.

Yeah, he gave the order to fire. So did Murat to his firing squad, telling them not to aim at his face. Vanity.

Speaking of original paintings, it was just a few years ago that I discovered the Reynolds portrait of John Burgoyne is in the Frick Museum in NYC. Detaille's painting of Napoleon at Friedland (l'Apogee) is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but has been recently put back in storage. Drat.
