Help needed: Shingle beach?
« on: February 13, 2020, 10:15:46 AM »
Anyone got any ideas about how to create a shingle beach?
Problem I've got is I can get the texture easily enough but I'd like the get a mixed colour...

Plan is to use Morrissons Quinoa and Buldar wheat mix (round seeds mixed with sharp crushed wheat) but colour is the problem.  Ideally I'd paint it different shades of grey but I'm concerned it will jsut clump.

Any ideas?

Micro nail art beads.
You can get different colours and sizes.(to mix in)
Alternatively you could simply thinly lay out a quantity of your mix and lightly spray paint it. Do the same thing with other spreads just with different colours/shades then re mix all shades bung it on the board and give a couple of light washes to harmonize it all.
What you might also find useful to help break up the monotony of shingles . Add a high tide mark with dried hurbs.

Have you checked your local Zoo store? They have aquarium gravel which could suit your needs.

Aquarium sand and grit, and leave it the natural colours. When you find a well stocked store, they will have sands and gravels in all kinds of colours and sizes. Also; they usually sell the stuff in handy bags of 5kg, so no need to buy 25kg bags at a hardware store...

I know it goes against the grain, as we're all used to paint and wash and then drybrush our sands and gravels, but trust me; the end result is so much more realistic when left in their natural colours.

Check Luke's APS Youtube channel for some results; he leaves his ground covers a natural colour most of the times and the results are phenomenal.

Some good advice.  Using food products for terrain?  Bad idea.  Attract creatures of an undesirable nature and just won't last.  Stick with the real thing as suggested.  Can't be beat.  The big challenge will be creating the semi-wet/wet/water margins.  The dry part is easy.  Good luck!

I would have thought the wet/dry boundary would be easily fixed with some marine varnish.

Thanks chaps.  The beach will be by the sea wall so dry.
