Wanted : Recommendation - Non-fiction book Hadrian's Wall
« on: February 16, 2020, 05:33:59 AM »
Later this year my wife and I will be cycling Hadrian's Wall.  I have seen a number of books on Amazon about the wall.  Does anyone have any particular recommendations.
I am wanting history/analysis rather than a guide.  Although a guide might also be good. :D

It's kind of dated (1974), but you could look for a copy of "A Walk along the Wall" by Hunder Davies, which combines history, memoir and travelogue.  For a straight history, consider Adrian Goldsworthy "Hadrian's Wall".

Bon voyage!  And I hope you get a chance to share some photos here!

My recommendation would be ‘Hadrian’s Wall In The Days Of The Romans’ by Ronald Embleton....I recall the book being something of a lifetimes project for Ronald Embleton who produced hundreds of excellent illustrations for it covering every aspect of the wall, from its construction to maintenance and every day life along it....enjoy your trip
