Greeks & Persians.
« on: February 20, 2020, 08:18:30 PM »
Vodkafan & myself had planned to fit in two games in one morning.
First Rebels & Patriots ACW. See 'Battle of Bright Cove Creek ACW) for pictures.
Then Greeks V Persians, trying out Fistful of lead core rules.

Unfortunately my failed attempts to kill that 'Damned Yankee!' Captain Appletree,
took too long. Despite my brilliant idea to have the same battlefield for both, but
swap out ACW buildings for ancient ones, we ran out of time. Did manage a few
teaser photos though.

Were you using the Persians as 'grunts' in that handsome looking FFofL game?

???

Yes Harry, as Grunts.
They only get D 8s against the Greek D 10s, & we were going to give the Greek Hero D 12 !
I have yet to see how it will work out, as the Persians have a lot of advantages:-
Lots of them, they all have bows, they all have spears & also shields.  Will have to 'tweak'
the shield rule, as at present it gives a bonus to your armour throw, & they ain't got any.
might give them a bonus to their wound throw.

What I really need is a VERY narrow mountain pass & another 292 Hoplites.
Then I could say, 'This is SPARTA !!!!'

When 6mm first came on the scene, I did a unit of 20 Hoplites.
This was part to see if I could do a reasonably good job on them.
Could I do Hoplite shields?
I was satisfied with the result, but they took longer per figure than
the 25mm ones I was painting at the time! It was not helped by
my decision to remove their cast in spears (which were, scale wise
about a foot thick) & replace them with tooth brush bristles.
I entered them in that year's Society of Ancients painting competition.
I do not think the judges could have noticed they were there, not beyond
the entry card, but on it! I decided that 6mm Ancients were not for me.
Some years later I did some 15mm Hoplite shields, with authentic designs.
There is a photo of them on my threat, 'Stuf wot I dun'

Those Persians look like the old 25mm Garrison miniatures... is that correct?  I had quite of few back in the 1970s and I think they still look very good -- and they are nicely painted!

Good spot  Custosarmorum.  I bought them years ago from a Bring & Buy.
They sat in a box ever since, waiting for a complete re-base & some TLC,
these they got recently. That was part of my 'Do something a month in 2020'
(see 'stuf wot I Dun').
Back 'in the day' just about the only figure choices were:-
Garrison, Hinchcliffe or Mini-Figs.  Garrison were my favourite. There was a
lovely picture in one of the (few) Wargames books in my local library which
had a unit of Garrison Hoplites. Oh how I used to drool over that. As I have
chipped away at the lead mountain I found them!!!!!  Long forgotten. I had
started working on them: Black undercoat, shield design (Serpent), Wire spears
& Scarlet horse hair crests.  Maybe this year I will finish them, maybe.
