I'm a huge proponent of well printed mats, however...I am with some of the guys above in that I don't want printed "items" on the mats, unless it's something akin to cobblestones, etc.

The second I see bushes or trees, or big things like bones, skeletons, etc...I'm not considering the mat.  It kills the versatility.  I own three mats currently (owned a couple others before), and the one which gets the most use is the most versatile one a simple "Steppe" pattern with grass, pebbles, etc.  The other two mats are more specialized.

I, like many hobbyists, would love to have the time/space/storage for beautiful proper 3D textured gaming surfaces, but the reality is I don't.  I do try to bring a lot of 3D terrain into my games, and my results are normally pretty solid.

I’ve been moving into mats and away from landscaped terrain for space and transport issues.  But have to agree with Elbows point on printed physical objects (trees etc).  I turned off the Cigar Box mats fairly quickly, but use Tiny Warmats quite happily and add the 3D elements manually - the loss of texture is compensated for by ease of use.

The production cost element is a strong one, these have reduced significantly in the last 20 years as the tech improves. 3D printing is heading the same way.

However, Teddy Bear fur will always have a place in my heart :)

Tiny Wargames have made a good impression this side.

Not all the Cigar Box mats have the printed fields, woods etc.
