how to make/paint damaged/destroyed markers

As the heading says has anybody got any ideas on how to make these and while we are at it how do you paint flames?

1) Small round base with some weight, like a coin.
2) Blob of glue on it.
3) Push some cotton wool onto the glue.
4) When it has dried, gently pull away some of the cotton wool.
5) Put a dollop of red paint into the centre of the cotton wool.
6) Lightly spray it black.

What Has.been said, I switch the last 2 steps though, black spraypaint first, then painting flames.

Not the best image, but the two plumes on the left were made with the above method. The explosions on the right were made using blended sponge mixed with water and black paint.
