Brush on Matt Varnish, recommendations please.
« on: March 08, 2020, 09:29:16 AM »
In recent years on a professional painters
advice I started using Daler Rowney Acrylic Matt Varnish that is applied with a brush. Beautifully flat finish, to the point metallics needed retouching with a Satin varnish occasion. However, I'm really struggling to source some and wondered if there is a good alternative anyone uses. GW stormshield and Vallejo both seem to have a slight shine.
Many thanks in advance
JB

Windsor & Newton Galeria matt varnish
Given it's Windsor and Newton I imagine that stuff is a great product. This looks like serious shit too but I have never used it. Probably too expensive to experiment with.

I get decent results from Vallejo matte varnish mixed with a little water.  It's bubbly when first applied but dries just fine.

Both Vallejo's Matt Acrylic Varnish and Winsor & Newton's acrylic Matt UV Varnish have worked well in the past. My avatar picture model was varnished with the Vallejo one. Both have zero odour, Vallejo's dries very fast and W&N is a bit elastic if layered in several layers (perhaps protects better from dings). Note that the W&N one is often sold with a slightly differing label than the one shown in the link, but it's the same stuff nonetheless.

Marabu matt varnish dries... matt:

But it is not acrylic, you need white spirit for dilution and brush cleansing.

Many thanks to you all, nothing like first hand knowledge of something. On the subject of which I have had some very pleasing results for a flat finish with the AK interactive range of paints. I also spotted today there is an AK interactive Ultra Matte Varnish. Anyone used it? If it's as flat as the Paint it could be a go to?

Another vote for W&N for the exact same reasons.

AK do a matte and an ultra matte. Ultra is tooooooo matte if used over a gloss, you'll get slightly opague 'white' sections in recesses. The matte is a bit more forgiving.

Windsor and Newton galeria the oil based stuff, on top of an acrylic gloss, best stuff ever, make sure you stir it well!

The Golden matte varnish is also excellent.

As always a great help and many thanks for the replies. I'm leaning towards the Windsor and Newton as this seems the most recommended. I'll try and get some this weekend and let you know how I get on.
Thanks again
JB

I've used Vallejo for all my more recent models, as the Windsor & Newton we get here in the New World seems to be off in some regard.

That's interesting Fram, my last bottle of the Daler Rowney Acrylic Matt Varnish stripped Enamel black primer I had applied with better better results than anything I've used to try and do that! My second choice was the AK interactive varnish so I may go with that. 🤔
