Good Battle of Berlin book
« on: March 30, 2020, 09:21:30 PM »
I am looking for a book that deals specifically with the fighting inside Berlin. The block by block street by street type fighting.
The books I find also cover the campaign leading up to the Berlin then switch over to Hitler in the bunker. I want to read about
the actually fighting inside Berlin. Can anyone recommend such a book?

There is https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin:_The_Downfall_1945
I have found other books by him to be very informative.

There is an Osprey book on Berlin, but their site is poorly (a search for Berlin eventually brought back two pages of Frostgrave/Ghost Archipelago)...

Several Tony le Tissier has several books that cover personal memoirs though most start at or about Seelow including:

Race for the Reichstag
Death was our Companion
Berlin Battlefield Guide

Personal memoir of a youth
Helmut Altner - Berlin Dance with Death

Interesting and detailed book on the Volkssturm
David K. Yelton - Hitler's Volkssturm: The Nazi Militia and the Fall of Germany, 1944-1945

For something different though not specifically what you are looking for but includes a lot on Berlin 1945:
Tim Heath - Hitler's Girls: Doves Amongst Eagles

'He could have lived a risk-free, moneyed life, but he preferred to whittle away his fortune on warfare.'

This book is extraordinary
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Panzers-Berlin-1945-Focus-Archer/dp/1908032162/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=panzer+wrecks+berlin&qid=1586040288&s=books&sr=1-1

Not about the politics or the considerations of military commanders, rather a deeply detailed account of the fight in different parts of Berlin, focused through the fate of various units and their vehicles.

It was on offer - £39 I think - when I bought it, and I applied a remnant from gift token also, so got it for £15 ! But yes. it's not cheap. Worth checking eBay and www.panzerwrecks.com from time to time for when they do a reprint.
