Hacksaw's 20mm Zona Alfa WIP thread (Update 05 July)
« on: March 31, 2020, 06:28:18 PM »
Having that peculiar syndrome that afflicts gamers - namely having too many things going on at once - I present the beginnings of my Zona Alfa build in 20mm. (Hopefully the images will work!!)

I'm going with the setting being in the late 1990s-early 2000s, in a world where the USSR never broke up. Given the emergency that worldwide Zones presented, authoritarianism flourished.

First up - my initial house (the first of many) - based on an actual house in the real-world Belorussian exclusion zone. Scratchbuilt from foamboard, corrugated paper, cofee stirrers, matchsticks, and mat board. I got a little wonky on the roof but otherwise it came out ok I think.

Next - some Anomalies, here being a couple of giant roach swarms and a giant fungus that fires spores when agitated. All Reaper Bones minis.

And finally for this installment, some of our stalwart Russian security forces who patrol the Zone...or at least bits of it.  1/72 Ukrainian Red Box figures. I based the camo on VSF Flora pattern, its a bit lighter than I intended but close enough. Some rather interesting poses in this set, to say the least. Many of the more interesting ones may get painted later. For now, an initial squad.

Next up will be figures from the Red Box/Dark Alliance Stalker sets (1 and 2).

Cheers!

Very nice job on the house and the minis.  I look forward to seeing more.  All the best and stay safe

All excellent but that house is perfect.

The shooting spore is pretty suave too.

That house is good.

Nice work on the figures.

Whilst mucking about with a 3D printing project (also for ZA), I managed to get another merry band of lads done for excursions into the Zone.  I was going for a Billy (from Predator) vibe with these. Another selection of Red Box/Dark Alliance Stalkers (figures from sets 1 and 2).

Cheers!

A rusty Zuk - this is the first vehicle I have 3D printed using an Ender 3 Pro. It was a bit rough when it first came off the plate but I managed to sort that out (mostly). The wheels are a bit crude, future prints will get better ones now that I am getting this thing dialed in.

The secret for this one was - Mod Podge. I used the MP+black paint mix I use for foam and whatnot (The one from Black Magic Craft on YT), just thin coats. In this case about 10 or so. Very easy to work with. Then I hit it with a coat of red oxide spray primer and brush painted the rest. The finish was smooth enough that careful application of washes was not an issue. I did almost no sanding to this model - I smoothed out the front slope of the roof and the windshield a bit and the rest is the magic of The Podge™.

Despite the Zuk being more Polish than Russian, I think it fits the aesthetic very well and it was used for a myriad of things. Cargo van, ambulance, etc, so printing a few will be well worth it. This is in 1/64, I did not fiddle with the sizing and it seems to scale well with the lads I have so far. Overall I am pretty happy with it. I learned a bit so that these will only get better as I go.

If you would like to have a go at one, the stl file can be found here - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3667584

I printed it with Hatchbox PLA, sliced in Cura 4.5, 0.16mm Dynamic quality. Not the most optimal settings but it ended up working.

Cheers!

Looks good. I can make out faint striations now that you pointed out it's a 3D print. It'll work fine - particularly when you set it on the table with all the other terrain.

Another Zuk. This one will end up on blocks.  Added a bit of Vallejo Ground Texture to the extra rusty spots.

Cheers!

Moving ahead at a thundering speed - akin to that of a glacier - I finally got the apartment bloc into a playable state. This started off as a test piece for Pavlov's House back in 2009 - a project that never got past the planning stages - but I ran across the carcass when I was cleaning out my old work area.

If I were to start from scratch I would not have built it like this...but in my effort to preserve my previous labour I spent likely more time than if I had just started over. I may not have any sense, but I do have an apartment bloc so there is that.

The finished (for now) Bloc -

A team clearing the building -

Not the greatest bit of terrain ever crafted but it will get the job done, I think.

Cheers!

Thanks for all the kind comments, all. I have more coming - especially given how things are, it is my hope that maybe someone will see these and enjoy them a bit - I love LAF for all the eye candy and cheerful helpful folks.
