I’ve ordered the Vallejo Black Grey so we'll see what that’s like.

Thanks again for input.

Hippo Grey, a craft paint, and as far as second tier, 20 times cheaper than hobby paint by volume!  :o

Good as owt you'll get Doug...
I use it as a highlight on 'proper' black, or sometimes as a weapons base coat, with a wash of black over it.

:)

If my Vallejo purchase doesn’t cut it, I’ll try the Hippo (if available in the UK). Thanks for the tip.

One last item that has not been considered, and is very often overlooked by miniature painters, is Artists Acrylic Paynes Grey, which is a very dark grey blue. I used huge tubes of it at Uni but it is available in liquid form if you look for it on the net.

You can also mix what are called Chromatic Blacks to suit your needs by mixing Prussian blue, Alizarin crimson and Raw Umber or a dark red (such as Indian red, Venetian red).

It well worth experimenting with as it is possible to have a black that chromatically compliments or contrasts with other colours. It's very subtle, not immediately obvious but it will be picked up on by the viewer.

I remember those days in art school: we were instructed to buy burnt umber, raw sienna, vermilion, raw ochre ultramarine blue, titanium white (and possibly cerulean blue???). All the colours you could need were made from those basics, including black (mixing BU and UB in equal parts).

Vallejo also has this  Heavy Charcoal Grey in the Extra Opaque series. It's as close to black as possible.
