Vallejo for Canadian Uniforms
« on: April 20, 2020, 11:37:47 PM »
Hey gang,

Looking for some tips on painting 1916-18 Canadian uniforms. As I understand it, they were a touch more green than the British counterparts, but I’m not sure if that was just an Early war thing, or all the way through.

What colours have you found work from the Vallejo range?

Thanks!

Alex

Hi, Alex

As I understand things, the greenish tinge to Canadian uniforms applied more to WWII than WWI.  At least, the only references to greenish Canadian uniforms that I've seen are WWII.

The Canadian tunics issued starting in 1913 were tailored differently than the British ones, with a tighter fit, 7 buttons rather than 5, standup collar (vs British falldown).  However these were mostly phased out over 1915 and Canadian soldiers were gradually issued with British tunics.

So for 1916-1918, Canadian uniforms will be basically the same as British.

One good way to give your soldiers a distinct Canadian look will be to give them their distinct sleeve patches.  These are the patches for the 1st Canadian Division, you can find patches for the rest of the CEF here:  http://canadiansoldiers.com/insignia/formations/cefform.htm

My pleasure.  Here is an example of how I did 13th Battalion (Royal Highlanders of Canada).  The arm patches can really pop out, so they are not generic troops but a specific regiment!

(bloody photobucket, someday I'll move these photos somewhere else...)

I have nothing to add regarding tunic colours or number of buttons but I just watched 1917 and the sleeve flashes really did stand out.

Thanks Will Bailie for that link!
